Rednecks and Racists

Walking through NYC was a culture shock for me.

I said excuse me to a guy and he looked at me like I was speaking gibberish. My cousin rolled his eyes and looked at me like I was stupid and informed me that next time I should just say get the f--- out of the way. Not 5 minutes later I was told to get the f--- out of the way my a middle-aged woman...

Southern Hospitality is also real I suppose.

"Southern Hospitality" is a farce. It's my experience that they'll talk nice to your face and then "talk smack" about you as soon as you turn your back. Two faced SOB's.

Give me real people any day...those who say "get the f*** out of my way" to your face and not behind your back.

At least they're not pretending to be someone they're not.

In The South most people are pretending to be someone they're not. This is also true in Southern California (I lived in in Irvine and La Jolla for three years).

In the south the pretenses are religious and moral. In SoCal the pretenses are financial.

I've been (lucky, cursed, forced, blessed, -- pick one) enough to have been stationed in the Southern tier of the US on a few occasions, (FL,AL,LA,TX), and found that yes, the culture is different. But for anyone to assign specific characteristics to a huge region based on their own personal experience is bias of the first order. People are people. Sure they talk different, the culture is different, the food and recreational practices are different. But you can say the same of any region of the US or the world. Racism is a world wide issue. So is small mindedness, geocentric pride, and cultural stagnation. I have on just a few occasions met with outright hostility from a Southerner based on nothing more than my accent and appearance. The same could be said for my experiences in Hawaii, France, Spain, or Boston.

Get over it folks.

I've witnessed the complete inverse, insult someone in the south you're likely to eat a few teeth, in NYC probably get tweetered about or maybe sued lol

Yeah, but in the South you can get away with saying anything about anybody so long as you say "Bless his/her heart," after it.

Hear, hear!

Now you got it!

This is 100% accurate, and I now have the perfect tag line for my Spin Zone posts:

"You are an ignorant crosseyed fool for not agreeing with my contention that the Tomahawk is the greatest trainer ever made.......bless your heart" :D

Rachel learned that trick about 15 minutes after we moved here. ;)

"Bless his/her heart" was also Midwestern code for "how unfortunate"

You may not realize it, but I couldn't give a **** about your politics.

The only one talking about politics was you. Racists and rednecks is not a political issue, they come in all party affiliations.

I don't know about racism but prejudice I have seen it. Unlike the nice private jets that park in front of the FBO entrance mine is always park at the far end. And unlike the jets I never get the red carpet. Oh well, that's what you get when you are only buying 20gals of AVGAS.

If everywhere you lived leaves you with such toxic opinions of the people the problem is probably closer to home.

Hell, many of these small towns still have two proms. One white...and one black. That one really blew me away.

It's not just "small towns". We've got schools around the Memphis metro area that still do this. I'm amazed.

Oh, but it hasn't. I've lived in a lot of other places not being discussed here. And I loved almost everywhere I've lived in the plains & upper midwest states. Great work ethic, lots of pride in ownership and very few people who pretend to be something they're not. This includes SD, WI, MN, MI, OH.

I enjoyed the PNW, again, good work ethic, healthy attitudes.

TX, KY, AR, AZ, FL, CO, NY and the New England states lay somewhere inbetween.

I've lived (worked) in a lot of places. Some great. Some mediocre. And some, well, were akin to hell.

Oh, and I'll put my home state of MO in the mediocre, at best, category too. We've been recently recognized as the most redneck state. Personally, I would've thought IN was more redneck but I certainly can't argue that MO ain't!

*SOMETIMES* segregation is not 'forced'. I played college basketball at a small Junior College in northwest Alabama. We had more white guys (roughly half the team) on our team than the rest of the teams in the state combined. We weren't a big-budget operation, so for our road games, we usually took two 15-passenger vans. Our head coach was white, and our assistant coach was black. On one of the road trips, somebody looked around and realized that all the white guys had gotten in the van with the head coach driving, and all the black guys got in the other van with the assistant coach driving. There was no discussion about it when we were loading up, and there was zero bad feelings between the 'races' on the team - it really was a very close team. It was just a natural activity that the black guys wanted to hang out with the black guys and the white guys wanted to hang out with the white guys. The end.

OTOH, you do still have a few principals that 'forbid' desegregated proms, which is ridiculous on all accounts.

I found that three people jumping on FC for stating the obvious... That people aren't ever truly who they claim to be... was quite fascinating human behavior.

He said Californians tend to pretend they're richer than they really are... True.

He also said Southerners tend to be less religious (or should I say pious)... Than they claim to be.

Neither of those is false. In fact, they're true of almost everyone on the planet in different degrees.

But I'm chuckling at three people here jumping him for saying it. There's a little window into human behavior in groups hiding in that.

We're all beautiful and wonderful people... in our own minds. ;)

Man...with all the social problems you guys are talking about, I'm glad it's nice and safe in DC. Nobody is racist here.

Not me. I'm a jerk. :D

How insular of them. Sociologists residing in Boston would never approve.

As in most parts of the United States, there are black neighborhoods, white, neighborhoods, Spanish, Asian, African, middle eastern neighborhoods. As much as politicians, soiciologists, and boo hoo white guilt liberals want to complain about it. It is by choice. It is human nature that people with the same background prefer to live amongst each other.

There was a conversation I was having at work, I brought up the fact that as a white person I would not want to live in a black neighborhood. The guy I was speaking with went on his "your a racist" rant. In chimes a black guy I works with, saying how he would not want to live in a white neighborhood. He explained how is more comfortable living with people that he has common background.

I can't disagree with that. I wouldn't be surprised if the separate proms around here are just people following "tradition", or "how it's always been". Someone once pointed out to me that if you did a search on demographics by zip code in this area you'd see racial make-ups that are on the order of 95% white or black (and proceeded to demonstrate). That's people self segregating.

What about interracial/intercultural couples? What are we to do in light of such supposed preference for self-segregation? Serious question. It's not like intercultural coupling is rare. According to the Census, we will be the majority by 2050....

Mh, ok, so housing discrimination doesn't exist, and 'people just like to keep to their kind'. I forgot.

I dunno. I'm a mutt (white/asian), but I look white. I live in a majority black neighborhood (90 to 95%). No issues here since we moved it (6 years ago), but I did have more than one person tell me that this area was majority black while house hunting.

I don't think anyone is saying that. Self-segregation is just a facet of it. How much is self-reinforcing? How much is systemic? How much is real racism?

Florida has changed a lot over the last 25 years and we have very few all anything neighborhoods. One of the richest neighborhoods, Celebration has the highest percentage of homeless students in their school, in the state.
Interracial couples used to have to pick one, or the other, as to where they chose to buy/rent but at least 40% if not 50% of couples seem to be biracial now. Nobody even notices.

Biracial - can be a black and Hispanic couple, black and white couple, or hispanic and black couple. Or you can have, at least in Florida, oriental and any of the the choices, one partner who is multiracial and one that is not, both that are and any combination thereof.

On my street we have homosexual couples, biracial coupes and a black couple to go with three white couples. The idea of segregated neighborhoods doesn't much effect the suburbs. The inner cities are far more likely to self segregate but that has nothing to do with racism, as much ethnocentrism.

Just remember that folks will hate you.

And then remember who those people are

Not that hard....I don't think Californians have ever been accused of being terribly intelligent.

I'm saddened to hear of your low opinion of Californians.

The fact is that my home-state is far more diverse than you may realize and many of us are in-fact quite smart (myself not necessarily included :goofy:). California is a leading developer of medical, military, nano and information technology. We also have the the precious city of San Francisco, which boasts the highest number of college degrees per square mile than anywhere else in the U.S.

I'm not sure how many years you've lived here (if any) but I think if you spent a considerable amount of time here you may hopefully change your tune about us.

I've never been to Virginia, but I certainly wouldn't call them stupid in the roundabout way that you did with Californians. Hope you come visit us and see for yourself...

I think the majority of people who self-segregate are first generation, because of the language and cultural familiarity. The other reason people self-segregate is the feeling of persecution by other groups and the need to stick together.

4th generation native Californian. Glad to get OUT 18 years ago and have no plans to move back. Plenty of family still there, and there's lots to see and do, but the inmates are running the asylum.

Have fun.

It's not for everyone (thank god). Glad you found a place to live that makes you happy :) Washington is a fine state...

Lived in LA for three months. Ground shook. 7.2 in Landers. Highways fell down. People acted like that was normal. Confirmed my suspicion that they were all living in denial or insanity.

Plus, anyplace that has re-elected Pelosi that many times...

Something wrong out there.
