Have not seen this mentioned yet: besides the climb performance issue, personally always a bit leery about climbing above a scattered cloud layer lest they solid up. Not hard and fast and a lot of times its nice and smooth but always keeping an eye open for a way back down. In Stephen Coonts' book Cannibal Queen he has a scene where he tells the ATC "I'm looking for a hole..." and I was thinking, never in a million years.

it wasn't a major problem because I knew I had more than one "out", and I had to take one of them. That's what outs are for right.
