Got cabin fever in freezing cold NJ so this question is because of that.

My Piper Colt has the old school oval shaped yokes which many love. My Grumman Tiger has yokes that are small and modern style. It is almost a bolt on change but nothing is that simple in the certified world.

So. AC 23.27 talks about replacement of parts with certified parts from other aircraft and It provides more visibility to instruments. Would this fly as a minor alteration ?

Or. Because its flight controls and if done wrong could cause major problems would you say major alteration ?

Its been done back in the day when field approvals were common but that road isnt as easily travelled.

Doubtful. Your correct its flight controls which is listed in 43.Appx A(a) and especially trying to put a Grumman control wheel on it. AC 23-27 is more of a "substitution" based guidance than a true alteration guidance so it wouldnt cover it. Now if you were signing Block 7 or 8 or both on a 337, and you can find an older Piper control wheel of a similar design, and you can find some Piper guidance on swapping any control wheels regardless the model or wheel type, and you tie all that together in Block 8, you might just swing a field approval with the right ASI. Or, you could be bold and install a different type Piper wheel and sign it off as a minor?? To me, the Grumman wheel requires more effort than I think its worth. At least thats how I look at it.

Looks like there are different yoke styles available in later model years, as well as PMA alternatives.

I do agree with you. I found this on the short wing Piper site. I tried to contact the guy but got no reply. People have done it on field approvals. ASI's in the northeast are so understaffed and busy that they dont even want to do ferry permits. There is an STC to do a single handle on the yoke shaft. https://share.google/khpwn4pc6yebLiAOq.
