Xyla Foxlin and the FAA Medial Wing

Care to summarize for us?
Not a lot of info in the latest video, it's more about her work with an organization whose goals are to make it easier for pilots with mental health issues.

She elides the question of what the diagnosis was and what she needs to do and demonstrate to get a special issuance. also there’s something off putting about someone who has to live her life in public via youtube videos
As I recall from prior videos, she had problems with the hormones from a drug eluting IUD causing depression and sought treatment. The source of the problem wasn't clear so they put her on meds and put in a diagnosis code of "histrionic personality disorder", possibly confusing her youtube personality with real life. Eventually the problem was identified, the IUD was removed, and the problem went away and the meds stopped. She made a video about it to help other women who might have the same issue, somebody saw it and reported her to the FAA, who yanked her medical even though the problem had been solved. She didn't say exactly what she had to do to get her medical back but I think it involved getting her representatives in Congress involved.

I agree with your distaste for many of the "look at me!" videos out there, but in her case she's actually doing things, making things, and encouraging young women to get into technical fields. Her technical and fabrication skills are excellent. How many beauty contest winners (she won her state pageant in the Miss America competition) would (or could!) build a high altitude balloon and send her winner's tiara into space (filming the whole thing of course)? Yes, she's bubbly over-the-top dramatic in her videos, but like any entertainer, it's her full time job and she's apparently making good money doing it.

So nothing about what she had to do to get her medical back?

Called her congress critter it sounds like.
She called hers and asked others to do the same, resulting in thousands of people advocating for her. What I like is she acknowledges that someone without her following would have had to fight this for years longer and still might not have won. She's happy she got her medical back, but is still fighting to make it easier on everyone else.

I had a similar fight with the FAA over kidney cancer. We didn't just fight for me, we fought so that nobody goes through this again. It worked.

Did she disprove her psychiatric diagnosis, or just beat the FAA into submission?

I would love to hear how one would go about disproving a psychiatric diagnosis exactly. What would that look like?

I had a run-in with the FAA over a type of reactive arthritis I've had since 1992. I've disclosed my condition at each medical review along with the medication I've taken for over 20 years. It was never a problem until 2018. My AME passed me, but the paperwork wound up on the wrong desk in Oklahoma City and the employee at that desk decided (without seeing me) that I wasn't capable of flying a plane. WTF?!!? I wound up getting a special issuance after lots of expense and reports from my GP and my Rheumatologist, but an SI has to be renewed each year with the same expensive process of getting specialist reports. The medication I am on is a simple and cheap sulfa drug that shouldn't be a concern. The only side effect is pee that is darker yellow no matter how much water I drink. So I went to basic med and am done with the FAA. My GP reviews my condition against the flight criteria every 4 years and I do an on-line refresher every 2 years. If I chose to go with the new Sport Pilot rules, I could continue flying my plane without ever seeing a doctor. That seems to suggest that the FAA is over regulating, especially for some types of pilots. I only fly for pleasure, and most of my flights are solo. In that regard, my abilities as a pilot should be less of a concern than my abilities to drive a 3 ton SUV. There isn't anyone looking over my shoulder as I get into my car. The creation of MOSAIC shows the FAA is open to change. At some point, they should just discontinue the 3rd class medical altogether. That would benefit those with mental conditions the FAA considers disqualifying as well as benefitting folks like me with other medical issues. It would be nice if the FAA or our government in general could make nice with Canada so they accept pilots flying under Basic Med. Mexico and the Bahamas are already onboard with Basic Med flights. In the meantime, this gal's continued fight for pilots suffering paperwork challenges get the relief they need. Good for her. It's easy to quit the war when your personal battle has been won. She's continuing to lobby for others and that's commendable. It doesn't hurt that I like the Cessna 120 she flies since I fly a taildragger too.

Medicals do nothing for aviation safety. Only self important bureaucrats think otherwise.

I love the, "You might have an untreated suicidal pilot," trope, as though anyone would want a treated suicidal pilot. I know I wouldn't.
I had a good friend who was a treated suicidal pilot. His wife was putting him through hell and his suicidal ideations had nothing to do with flying, but the FAA made it pretty much impossible for him to get recertified. I'd fly with him for sure (he could give me flight reviews and such as long as I was still legal to be PIC).

That's certainly your call. I wouldn't fly with anyone I knew to be suicidal, even as a passenger.

No, "expressing an opinion" that other people shouldn't be doing something that DOES NOT AFFECT YOU WHATSOEVER, and that other people actually enjoy, is bitching.
Suit yourself. I have every right to my opinion about her youtube videos and you tube in general.

She's a cute girl talking about flying. This formula works. I enjoy watching some of her videos, others aren't for me. Beats watching sitcoms or dramas on TV!

I'm thankful that she didn't just keep this quiet and spoke up about it. Someone threatening suicide is serious and should be handled carefully. Someone saying they're depressed should be understood as being human and handled differently. People like Xyla using her platform to raise awareness will help us improve a broken system.

So why are you wasting time in a thread about a youtube video in a subforum about videos?

Nauga,
positively negative
Hot YouTubers have sexy cover pictures, and just looking at those doesn’t require one to admit to watching the videos.

It’s like the Victoria’s Secret catalog of the internet.
