When looking at the weather on a Garmin box, how does one tell whether the data came from XM or from ADS-B In? If the two data sources disagree, which one does it use to display?

XM weather should always be fresher/newer than ADS-B. I'd expect it to use the latest information.

Depends which one you asked for. If you have more than one weather source connected to a GTN 750 and you hit "Weather", you'll get a menu allowing you to choose among the options you have installed, which can include not only XM and FIS-B, but also Connext (through the Iridium network and GSR 56), onboard radar, and stormscope.

The GTN does not look at multiple sources at once, nor does it determine whether one of them "disagrees" with another - That wouldn't really be possible due to the time differences between transmission methods anyway. You only get one radar source at a time. If you're equipped for more than one, choose the one you need at the moment. The three datalink ones are all about the same except FIS-B only gives a high-res picture within the region as opposed to nationwide. On-board radar is real-time, but has limitations for looking further along the flight plan. Choose the one you need for the information you're looking for.

Cool, thanks. The G1000 doesn't give a data source menu that I can see.

Yeah, and those are going to be largely airplane-dependent. For example, while our club's DA40 has both a GDL 69A and a GTX 345R hooked to the G1000, Diamond has not approved a software update in a while, so the G1000 doesn't even know how to get the weather from the 345. So even though we have two pieces of hardware that support weather, the software only supports XM.

The best way to answer the question is to find the version of the software that the G1000 has in the aircraft in question (for example, the DA40 has 0321.22), and go to Garmin and download the manuals for that specific aircraft type and software version.
