Xavion

Bought but have only played with it. I think it has potential.

Jonesy,
Have you set up your planes profile in the programs' settings?
Have you tried getting to altitude, pulling the power and following the hoops all the way to runway?

I went so far as to buy an Ipad mini (I am an android guy) and Xavion.
I have not pulled power and tried to follow it to a runway, though I should practice that. I did notice the vertical size of the HITS is too large for my screen and I do not know if that is adjustable. I have also noticed that unless I am fairly high (8,000 plus AGL) few if any airports show as within glide range of my Lancair.

I would like the ability to run in the background if I were running foreflight, but I do not use foreflight. I use Anywhere map. I do not need an additional attitude indicator so that is of little value to me. In all honesty, I much preferred the emergency mode in Anywhere map pro. AWM pro emergency mode draws an arc in front of the plane where the aircraft will impact terrain based on forward speed, rate of descent, and terrain database. It also turns on terrain graphics on the screen. It is pretty easy to keep the arc on the beginning of a runway by turning toward or away from an airport, adding or decreasing drag, etc. Unfortunately, this feature is only available in AWM pro and not in their android version called freedom. I use freedom as the android tablet Asus TF700 is so outstanding in the cockpit. So far, to my knowledge, there are no equivalently good windows based tablets.

Edit: I just learned about this 800 nit windows 8 tablet:

Wow! A little think, and a little pricey but looks like a good option in a cockpit.

Anybody still using Xavion given the new pricing model of $19.99 a month?

OK, Xavion 1.38 is here!

OK, Xavion 1.38 is here!

It is at the App Store now... grab it and let me know how it goes!

I now have pricing as a free App, and $19.99 per month! This is simply about the same as the standard EFB Apps, but of course with a wildly-different feature-set. As well, all existing customers should get until March 1, 2015, for free, so I am giving away $100 of free subscription to all existing customers, so everyone is getting more than their money's worth.

Now, for Xavion to recognize that you are an existing customer, you should be logged into the App Store in your control panel before you launch Xavion 1.38, and hopefully you will only have to do this once. As well, for existing customers, once you have run Xavion 1.38 just once, then you should in theory even be able to cancel your 99-cent subscription... though this might be foolish, since this subscription is one of the ways that Xavion can tell that you are an existing customer if you ever have to install on a NEW device...

Anyhoo, give it a try at the App Store and let me know how it goes!

Once you download and run, go to the NOTES menu, SYSTEM sub-menu.. be sure your version is shown that as 1.38... that is how you will know that you installed the latest version.

Now, 1.40 is close to upload to Apple, and that version soundly trounces version 1.38 in features, refinement, testing, and performance!
And, I already have features in the pipeline for post-version 1.40 that will, quite simply, blow your mind.
Have you heard yet that with an iLevil receiver and TruTrak autopilot, in-house development versions of Xavion will actually FLY THE AIRPLANE DOWN TO AN AIRPORT? And have you heard of the new iWatch from Apple THAT WILL MONITOR YOUR HEALTH WHILE YOU WEAR IT, and send that data to your iPhone or iPad in real-time REGARDING YOUR HEALTH AS YOU FLY THE AIRPLANE? Put these pieces together, and we see stuff coming down the pipe in the near future that is simply mind-blowing.

Anyhoo, here is the new stuff for 1.38... grab it now and let me know how it goes!

I still use it. Have not heard about the monthly fee. I never remove the ipad from the plane which is likely why I did not know. So for those of us who bought early on I guess if we do not update the software we may continue to use it. Wonder if I may continue to use the software I purchased at some point later if I were to ever update my ipad hardware.

I will not be paying a monthly fee. I have purchased a few apps / programs which were later abandoned or saw fees instituted. Not the type of company I wish to keep.

Re: monthly fee…. I agree. Id rather swallow a yearly subscription over a monthly recurring fee.

Besides the connection to the TruTrack autopilot, what else are we getting for $250/yr?

I'm not sure how he gets $240/yr. as "standard" pricing when the EFB leaders are at $150. I like what Xavion offers, and would spend SOME money to keep the airport database current, but I don't need to buy an additional set of approach charts every year. The .99 cents a month for airport data is very reasonable, if it's still available.

The subscription offerings are confusing, but it doesn't look like the 19.99/month option includes charts. I like the idea of this app, but it really doesn't replace Foreflight or Pilot.

He's dreaming if he thinks many pilots will spend $20/mo. for this app, even if it includes ALL the charts. It's a great concept, but one that could (and I suspect will) be incorporated in other EFB products in the years to come.

I think his pathway to the nearest airport would be great as part of the G1000 type systems. Maybe Garmin will buy his technology. Otherwise, I have played with it when it came out and could only see it being useful if you had another ipad you could dedicate full time.

I've confirmed it's $20/mo for the BASIC airport information...in other words, to use it at all. I think that's insane. The developer thinks that is "stupid-crazy cheap" and he should really raise the price because pilots will be flocking to this product since $20/mo. doesn't even qualify as "pocket change in aviation".

I don't know...an extra $240/year over the last 35 years of my flying seems like it adds up to a decently large number for something of truly incremental, backup value.

I'm on hold with Apple looking for a refund of the original $99 price. He's stripped the value of it as far as I'm concerned.

Let me know when that happens...

I use a dedicated iPad on the side of my EVO at all times
I don't use the nearest button on the g 1000 since xavion is constantly not only updating the closest airport but giving me the route and glide info
The info regarding parameters is easy to acquire.
240 a year is cheap insurance when you have an engine failure in the air and need an approach in a hurry
The fellow that killed himself in a lancair when oil filled his windscreen would be alive today if he had this 240 bucks a year app, don't look at the windshield and use the highway in the sky to come down. I practice ifr to the airport using that feature with a copilot help and can do a category III landing (of course simulated) with it. Also I couple the g1000 for the approach to the airport with mdh or da if there is time and my 750 autopilot will do the approach hands off.
Can't wait for the g1000 to be working in unison with xavion.

I fly a Lancair, and bought Xavion as I felt it was worthwhile. Xavion runs constantly on the side in my plane also. It was marketed as a 1 time purchase. Clearly some see value beyond that one time purchase while others do not. Regardless, the terms of the original purchase should be honored for those who purchased prior to the institution of a monthly fee structure.

Anywhere map pro version offers an emergency view with a "ground impact arc" that appears in front of the aircraft. It represents the point at which the plane will contact the ground based on forward speed and rate of descent. By adding drag, removing drag, turning toward or away from the airport, I can position the arc at the beginning of a runway. I can keep it there and nail the threshold of that runway dead stick. I find it as intuitive as Xavion. It is only in their pro version, not freedom at the present time though unfortunately. If it were I believe I would remove Xavion from the plane.

Sigh... I bought it and really have only used it a couple of times. I don't have a mount that'll hold both my iPhone and my iPad, and ForeFlight is way more valuable in-flight (and IIRC, Xavion takes a bit of time to launch if you switch from something else).

I really like the concept, but I won't be subscribing unless he cuts the price in half AND adds support for the Stratus (it's not "closed" it just doesn't have the API published, and someone with Austin's technical skill should be able to reverse-engineer it in a fairly short period of time).

Were you successful?

How do you initiate this process with Apple? I want my money back as well.

He's not contesting the refund. The Apple rep is trying to figure out how they accomplish it. I've told them a store credit is fine. Still awaiting a final answer.

Thanks for the information. Once you hear, please let us know. Really unhappy how Austin let this evolve.

I most certainly. I suspect there will be a long line of refund requests. I, too, am disappointed. I had high hopes for the product. That said, I foresee others baking this capability into existing products eventually, which will be a better solution the multiple products.
