On a 1965 PA 28 140 does anybody know how to hook up the resister that comes off one of the posts of the solenoid, does anybody have a picture of it and instructions.? Mine came off on one side and I want to make sure I hook it up to the proper connector in the proper way .Also a picture would be good if somebody has one to show how they are hooked up in other piper Cherokee’s I also would like to know what the resister is for.

I'm assuming you're speaking of the starter solenoid, not the master relay. It's a diode, not a resistor. One end is on the solenoid coil terminal, the other end is grounded to the frame. The coil voltage spikes when the solenoid is opened by releasing the key from the start position, and the diode shunts that voltage to ground. There's a stripe on the diode, that's the end which connects to the solenoid coil terminal. The other end is grounded.

If you are talking about the master relay, connect it as shown in the second image, from the coil terminal to the energized (battery) side of the relay.

The third image is just to show you what the stripe may look like. Diodes have polarity and must be connected in the correct orientation.

The resistor on the master relay is nothing like the pics above.
Mine went bad, but caused no troubles. it's connected between the cathode of a diode to the "hot" side of the solonoid.

I have a old fashion post diode, And it Has one End hooked up to the battery side on the solenoid, and the other end goes to the diode the diode is connected or grounded On to the bracket that the solenoid is mounted to but down lower on the bottom of it And then there are two Mika washers between the bracket and the post diode and the connector that I think, I say think because the wire broke off and there was an old connector down there and so I would assume that that’s where it was connected. But before I reconnect it I want to be absolutely sure where it goes.,was connected to a resister And that resister is connected to the Small terminal on the solenoid not sure if it is the I or the S terminal Anyway I will load the pictures soon as I can but your pictures are very helpful it’s close to what I have but mine is a older version. With an old post diode http://tinypic.com/r/11grom8/9instead of your new one

That blue side is where it was connected to the cathode Of the diode

BlueRooster that is why I was confused because the diode is mounted to the bracket And the solenoid goes to the cathode on the diode and it connects to the hot side of the solenoid so I was afraid that something would short out but then I noticed that there were the two Mica washers to insulate the Solenoid From grounding on the bracket It could be that my Old Mica washers are cracked and it was shorting out and that’s why it broke off because it got hot. I’ll give you a picture of the old mica washers.
I just wanna make sure I connect it up properly so it goes from the small terminal on the solenoid to the cathode of the diode in the other end of the diode goes to the large terminal on the solenoid the one that goes to the starter solenoid?

I saw another post under the Cessna forum where the current is supposed to Flow from a small lug or terminal To a larger lug or terminal. Mine probably works the way it is but maybe hooked up a little bit backwards in the sense that mine goes from the large terminal to the diode and then from the cathode of the diode to a small terminal on the solinoid And that might be why mine has a resistor between the diode and the solenoid terminal.
Probably just put together by some mechanic in Georgia, works but might be a little bit off I’m not sure if anybody has any time looking at my pictures and tell me what you think if you can figure it out.
