Oak Harbor has some real problems.

From the police blotter

Friday, Sept. 2

At 1:39 p.m., a caller reported a pit bull was tied up near the entrance to the thrift store on SE Barrington Drive. The caller was concerned for the safety of customers.

At 9:38 a.m., a SE Castle Park Court resident reported chickens were roaming the neighborhood and digging up the flower beds.

Send them to Leno. He likes this sort of stuff.

And it does point out the advantages of living in a place like Oak Harbor, doesn't it?

My neighbor has chickens, and they often get out of their pen and into my yard. I don't have a problem with that. It think they're cool and we get fresh eggs sometimes. Due to the changing nature of our community from a largely rural area to a suburban area bordering rural he now has to get a zoning variance to keep the five chickens.

This is awesome. Though I did live in Windsor, California and two amazing things happened:

1. I left BOTH of my car doors all the way in the open position - as in swung open. When I went out to the driveway the next day, nothing was stolen. Amazing.

2. One of us did not close the front door all the way (or use the deadbolt) and went away for a 3-day weekend. Came home, the door partially open, and nothing was touched in the house.

I imagine the chickens were taking care of the bugs in the garden, free organic management.

When I first moved to alpine I was surprised by a lot of those kinds of small town things. For one thing most folks in town leave their houses unlocked and I have never locked our house since sept of 1999 even when we were gone for 8 mos. Frankly I'm not even sure where any of the keys are at this point.

One day, when I had first moved from Dallas, I was running errands in town and left my purse at the library on the back of a chair... When I got to a place where I needed it I nearly panicked and finally remembered the library... When I got there I discovered it in the exact same spot and the women said, " oh we figured you were running errands and would be back in a bit" like it was perfectly normal to leave a purse in the open like that and then come back to get it hours later.
There have been lots of things like that here that make me like it even more - quite a change from DFW

This put me away too

Wednesday, Sept. 7

At 6:50 p.m., a caller reported hearing a woman at a NW Redwing Drive location talking about a man “being on a short leash.”

At 1:36 p.m., a caller reported a man holding a birthday cake was sitting under a tree at a SE City Beach Street location. The caller thought it was suspicious because the man wasn’t eating the birthday cake.

here are a couple more reasons

Here's one from our local Port Aransas newspaper:

8:24 A.M. • A woman in the 4900 block of State Hwy. 361 told an officer she thought someone had been using her computer Internet account

Ah, small-town life!
