Lets give Tony some great ideas. I say "punt" the G.Canyon.

Anyone have some ideas?

How about Nantucket Island? :thumbsup:Could fly there.:dunno: AOPA Flight Training mag August 09.

Other ideas?

Here's another thought:

If one opens my Website, clicks on Galleries, and scrolls down to Vinalhaven Island, Maine, it's a very relaxing environment.
(Hardly up to the glitter of Nantucket, but for peace and quiet . . .)

Someplace very relaxing. Weddings are very stressful, especially on brides. A nice relaxing stint in a resort with a spa for the Mrs.

What Viveca and I did was take 3 weeks and the airplane. We had one place we had to be, Detroit to see my family. Other than that it was get up in the morning, check the weather and ask each other "Anything else we want to do here, or which way do head today". Made it to maybe 10% of the places we talked about but it was the top 10%.

Best vacation I ever had.

Along those lines- cruises. You just need to get there. Everything else is handled by the people on the ship. Also resort type hotels.

IMHO, for Tony and Leah the Grand Canyon is a great idea. I wouldn't go there for mine most likely, but I'm not Tony and I'm not marrying Leah.

I think Joe's idea is the best one in the thread so far, though.

Isolated.

Relaxing beyond measure.

No cell signal.

And...

...close enough to Marfa to stop by an glide a little.

Gina and I are getting married next Saturday and we finally settled (after debating Hawaii, a cruise and a lot of the "standard" honeymoons) on a quiet little bed and breakfast in southern Maryland. It's close enough to DC to have things to do if you want to sight-see or and there are plenty of things to do in the opposite direction as well.

Here's the bed and breakfast we're staying at: http://www.opengatesfarm.com/
The people who run it are great and among the most customer service oriented people I've ever dealt with (now....if we can just get them to run an FBO!).

Here's some of the sightseeing trails for the area: http://www.somdtrails.com/alltrails.html

I highly recommend checking out Brownie's Beach in Calvert County (http://mysite.verizon.net/browniebeach/where.html), where you can collect fossils right on the beach. I used to go there all the time when I was stationed out in Maryland for the Air Force and found fossils ranging from 1/4" shark's teeth all the way up to the coveted 4"+ Megalodon teeth (think the shark from Jaws, but real and thankfully extinct) and the occasional bone from whales, porpoises and dolphins. Here's another good site to look at that has some great pictures of the cliffs and the bay: http://www.fossilguy.com/sites/calvert/

Right down the road from the bed and breakfast is the Friday's Creek Winery, which came very highly recommended by some friends I still have in the area. http://www.fridayscreek.com/

Another can't miss in the area is the Calvert Marine Museum: http://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com/

If you're looking at getting away from your family and friends and just spending a relaxing few days, this area gets my vote.

Hawaii. Yes, it's slightly cliche, but it's also by far the best.

I recommend 5 days on Maui, then 5 days on Kauai. It's pretty amazing...

Hawaii is ok.. if you stay off/away from Waikiki..

I did mine in Oahu, but it was a mixed purpose trip.. I spent years there as a child, and so I got to take my new bride to all the fun places I used to go as a child.

I second the motion that there needs to be some pampering for the new bride.. de-stress, spa...

Unless you have a girl who's into primitive camping, she may not like the back country getaway that much.. But.. I DO have a friend who just tied the knot at a flyin wedding in the back country on the Snake River.. Honeymoon was elsewhere.

we've both been to hawaii. i think the grand canyon will be fine. neither of us have ever been there.

And the dining room "special of the day" is dysentery. They are the equivalent of cattle feed lots. Don't ever take the serving tables down in order to achieve max weight gain/passenger. When else in your life are you invited to stay up for the "Midnight Buffet"?

I say make it simple for yourselves, Marry in Vegas, Honeymoon in Vegas. I got married at a Drive Through in a rented '68 GTO Ragtop. Our "Reception" was the Buffet at the Bellagio. The whole affair including the rental was under $300 dollars.

Slightly cliche'!!!???

I think Hawaii is over hyped and over priced. The Caymans islands are just as nice and cheaper (airfare wise) with less people. I also like Belize a whole lot. Great country with really cool people and interesting stuff to see and do on land and on the sea.

Flying over the Grand Canyon is awesome, even with the restrictions. Page is a nice place to stay as you have all the stuff around Lake Powell to do and you can easily fly over to GCN if you want to see the south rim from the ground.

Hmmm...

I've heard mixed opinions on Belize. Heard some negative stuff this weekend.... and some positive stuff.

A friend just got back from Tahiti with pretty nice reviews.

A cousin of mine flew through the canyon before all the rules. That's my idea of a view!

+1

Wifey and I did a cheapo Disney cruise/park thing (on our dime). 4 nites on a bargain basement Carnival boat, 3 nites at Disney. We took the cruise part first and were VERY glad. Even a low-key, small wedding with two not-really-into-the-whole-wedding-day-of-a-lifetime-spend-every-last-dime-on-one-day-out-of-a-life thing was pretty exhausting.

Cruise is good. Cruise is relaxing. Cruise is sleep in, everything is taken care of, drink and don't worry about driving. Cruise is good. Cruise means sleep. Cruise is good.

Grand Canyon means walking. Newlyweds don't want to walk. They want to sleep and "sleep."

You haven't met Leah. Hiking in the Grand Canyon would be quite relaxing for her.

THAT is an amazing pic, Mike. Not much else to say. it really is breath take'n.

That's not my experience. Other than very few concentrated tourist areas, it's devoid of tourists. Then add some great restaurants and some of the best scenery in the world, and it's very hard to compete with IMO.

Depends on where you stay and what you do, of course. YMMV....

It was an amazing trip I took back in June. If you want to see more pics from that trip, they are here:

Some of the most incredible scenery to be seen from the air is in Arizona. Near Flagstaff there is Meteor Crater which is incredible. It's so big a C150 got stuck inside and crashed trying to get out back in the late 60's. Just to the southeast of Meteor Crater there's the San Francisco volcano range where there are dozens, if not hundreds of cinder cone volcanoes which are amazing to view from the air. Lake Powell is an incredible lake to fly over. I only spent a day there on my way to California, but I hope to go back to Page, AZ soon.

I loved Tahiti, but my suitcase was not nearly large enough for all the cash I needed just to eat.

Hawaii, I found delightful, and not nearly as costly as I had been conditioned to expect. I'd go back (especially, Kauai) any time.

We were at lake Powell when I was a kid. Rented a houseboat, saw rainbow bridge(is that right?), the rock rainbow. I'll never forget that lake, it was beautiful. Don't remember much of the canyon, guess I should have seen it from the air,eh?

Thanks for the pix Mike, I'll make sure the wife DOES NOT see them! It'll cost me some coin.:D

Honeymoons are wonderful whatever you do and combining it with a trip to somewhere exotic, secluded or just new will of course be memorable.

However, speaking as an old man who left for his honeymoon early the morning after I'll give a little something to consider.

Stay around and visit with the gathered families. There is probably someone their that you won't be seeing again and a lot of family you won't see very often in the future. Our out of town relatives stayed at the hotel and visited for the weekend while we were gone. Seeing relatives at Weddings beats the other common gathering event funerals by a wide margin.

When my daughter was married it was travel for the entire family since she was living in CA. We held the wedding and the four day party at the Casino Hotel in Primm, NV on the CA border. What a great time for everyone and the last visit for many with my wife's grandmother, she died the next spring.

Enjoy the family and the Wedding. Take the vacation in a couple weeks when you need time together to really unwind.

Whatever you do, it will be right until it was all wrong but then after a while longer it will have been perfect. Life's like that once you're married.

Enjoy!!!

I can't believe no one has suggested Niagra Falls yet :D

Having traveled extensively to both places, it's not my experience either as long as you get away from Waikiki. Our honeymoon was a week each on Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui. We spent a day and a half on Oahu coming and going. All the islands have something unique to offer. Hawaii (the big island) is active volcanos where you can hike to actual oozing lava flows, go to the top of Mauna Kea for the astronomy buff, and snorkle some awesome reefs. Kauai is all about the Napali coast, and Waimea Canyon (grand canyon of the Pacific). Maui - just get the book Maui Revealed and follow your interests.

You can get checked out at Hilo airport and rent a 172 to do your own tour over the lava flows. Maui has some rental aircraft and a school. But just take the helicopter tour on Kauai to the wettest place on earth.

Cayman is great if you get away from Seven Mile beach and stay down at an east end beach house or go to Brac or Little Cayman. Diving is spectacular but not anywhere near the same league as a Hawaiian adventure style vacation.

leah is looking forward to hiking the canyon. ive been to florida, california, and hawaii. they are all nice but im not the type to just sit on the beach all day and the ocean really isnt going to hold my interest for a week.

Just 6 weeks ago, they weren't letting anyone near the active lava flows near the water- there were places you were allowed to go, however I do not know how strictly they enforced it. I also do not know if you could hike to the other places where lava is on the surface- I really only had a short time to research the trip, and only a short time in Hawaii so I freely admit I could be very wrong on these items. I was told part of the issue is that the lava is flowing over private land now, fear of lawsuits?:dunno:

Does it really matter?

Tomorrow, Diz and I will be hitched for 37 years, DO NOT choose where you are going, let her choose or in the future it will be your fault:smilewinkgrin:.
I thought you were coming to 6Y9, we have the Sturgeon Gorge and the "24 guy" is all lined up. Our museum was a Catholic Church before I sawed the Cross off the roof and we'll set up a buffett at Hoppys with a bonus stop at Up Chuck's:cheerswine:
Seriously ,have fun where ever you decide and remember:
It is a proven fact that married men live longer----- so if you want a slow death--- get married:thumbsup:

Not so much at the time, but 20 yrs later when yer wife starts talking about your honeymoon and you can't remember any of it, things get interesting.

Luckily, Leslie and I hit that mark a few months ago. And I still remember where we honeymooned.
