In case you missed it, Apple announced the new 9.7inch iPad last week in 32GB ($329) and 128GB ($429) configurations with 4G as a $130 add-on. Alongside that, the iPad mini4 now only comes in one 128GB configuration for $399 with an optional $130 4G add-on. That makes the 32GB WiFi-only iPad 9.7 the cheapest iPad in the store even though the mini4 has an older, slower CPU (Apple says the new iPad is 1.8x faster than the mini4). The way I see it, the mini4 has 3 possible futures.
- It continues on as-is. Since pilots are the only people buying iPad Minis, Apple goes with aviation pricing.
- A new mini5 is in the works. The current $30 price delta on the Mini4 doesn't seem to support this possibility though.
- The iPad mini form factor is dead.
