What is appropriate behavior for a DPE?

Just be aware that if you have any soft spots in your record, you may find yourself the subject of "anonymous" allegations.
Meh. If you are a nonpro there ain't nothing to worry about. Hobby pilots rule the skies.

All good advice, I appreciate it! I've been told by some that I should just drop it and be happy with my rating and others have said to report it. I personally am not the kind to let someone get away with this sort of behavior, especially when given a threat to "answer carefully". I wasn't even happy after I passed the checkride. I agree that a 709 ride would be worth it if it means that this guy is held accountable.
I think the question you have to ask yourself if whether or not your conscience will allow you to stand idly by believing others will be treated as you were.

Thanks Ben :) I've flown an SR22 into Jackson Hole, beautiful place!

Agreed on the "beautiful" part...

Decent view from my front yard....

My gut feeling is... This gal has integrity....

I have 10 bucks she turns the SOB in...

A local DPE in my previous area had his designation pulled for paperwork errors that gave the appearance of pencil whipping, but AFAIK his graduates were never retested. I think the offenses that they nailed him on were on BFRs or IPCs and not checkrides, not sure if that would make a difference.

Was that "Horrible Howard"? If so, that was a few years back.

Yeah, I would absolutely not want some else to go through what I went through...

There are 3 sides to every story, hers, his and somewhere in the middle is the truth.

Have this DPE come on the forum and tell his side of the check ride. At least then there will be enough information to draw some sort of conclusion.

This is not a case of "the DPE failed me unfairly." It's a case of "the DPE acted like a jerk." I've found that most jerks rarely admit to acting like jerks. I'll go with the OP's side of the story. Luckily, the DPE's I've used have been very professional. If one weren't, I'd have no problem dropping a dime on him and being on record. There's experienced instructors out there that would make good DPE's, so why should we pay money to jerks?

So you know who the DPE was, and he told you his side of the story?

A good DPE puts the candidate at ease so that he or she can perform to the standard he/she was trained to. I don't have to hear his story to know he failed miserably if the candidate says she was yelled at, rushed, and berated. She obviously was not put at ease.

It could be a case where the dpe was just having a bad day and is used to taking it out on the world. Could be he's always this way. Don't give him a pass. My private checkride was a smooth, easy, learning experience. They all should be.

I did not know being put at ease was part of aviation as it exists in nature. I don't agree that a DPE should act like an ass, but stress and distraction is not something unusual in flying.

Assuming there was a discrepancy between the DPE's story and the examinee's, how would you know who was telling the truth?

Stress is inherent in it being a checkride. Distractions provided by the DPE should be a part of every checkride but there is no need to use yelling and the like as the way to distract a candidate. That's just being a p#####.

Ah, so you can just hear a story by someone you don't know, have never met, and from that derive a conclusion as to what happened? :rolleyes2:

From a professional standpoint, from someone who has dealt with these kind of matters, I can tell you the OP's story doesn't add up, and there are some irregularities that lead me to believe this is either exaggerated or simply not true.

Experience. Right now I see some things in the OP that are suspicious.

To drill down to the truth would require a further investigation from both parties. After a few questions to both what really happened would start to be clear, but right now I have my doubts this event even took place.

The OP did not ask us to draw and quarter someone without giving them a hearing. She gave us a description of her checkride experience and asked if she was out of line in thinking this was inappropriate behavior and if so what we would do. As far as I'm concerned, it could have been a hypothetical question. No names were mentioned so there was no besmerching the name of a potentially innocent DPE. If I had been treated as she said she was treated, I would drop a dime on him to the FSDO. One would hope the FSDO ops inspector would get the other side of the story and solicit recent examinees of the DPE to decide if sanctions were warranted.

Hmm, your statement is contradictory, whereas you know nothing about me and yet you are drawing conclusions as to my validity.

This was my experience and it was a frustrating one. I came here seeking advice and I appreciate those that actually gave constructive, useful feedback.

Whatever. There are parts of your story which don't add up. Like I said previously, I've dealt with similar situations before, I would like to hear the other side of the story as well as yours.

OP, if you passed who cares. That's all that counts right? To the extent that he didn't grab anything, pull anything out or ask you to perform non aviation acts, I don't see an issue.

It's certainly possible that these two pilots just were oil and water, that does happen.

I re-read the first post, and it was credible up until that business about the DPE making a veiled threat about the FAA survey. That strains my imagination a bit.

Given the recent history of this board I'm pretty skeptical of new posters with only a few posts.
