The "I'm a pilot - no - you are not" thread made me think of this one.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A fireman? A race car driver? A rock star?

At age 5, a TV kid's show host asked me that question. I answered, "garbage man." Not the answer he was expecting, so I explained that They only work one day each week and get to hang-off the back of the truck!

just to beat henning to it: porn star! :wink2::D:D:yikes:

That is really cute.

One of my earliest memories is flying on a Northwest Airlines Boeing 747 from MSP to HKG via NRT and back.

I wanted to be a pilot when I grew up, seriously.

It was short lived, but astronaut was on the list. It was the 60's.

I wanted to be a dolphin trainer / dog trainer / horse trainer / exotic animal trainer. Then I learned they made no money. So animals are my passion but not my job.

I used to stay after the Tiger show at Marine World Africa USA and ask all kinds of questions. Of course the trainers were paired with one tiger since birth and the men were all over 200lbs and 6 feet tall. That made me sad since they "play" with the tigers full claws and all which would knock me over for sure.

I wanted to be a missionary until my 7th grade counselor told me that I was too smart. After Sputnik, I decided to be an astro physicist.

Somewhere between an IT guy, software developer, and pilot...which is exactly where i am now.

First thing I can remember wanting to be was a fire lookout or a ranger. Then I went through and discarded many other things until I realized I already was "something". :dunno:

Still don't know what I want to be when I grow up but at 71, I've tried a lot of things. Hope I have time to try a lot more. But then, why grow up????

Nothing. I never fantasized about growing up.
I tend to do whatever it is I want to do, but two things still loom ... musician (although I am one, just not Really) and helicopter pilot.9
(SOW - damn InfoTango for his thread!)

I too was asked by a kid's TV host. I said sailor but seeing how I live on Nebraska that didn't pan out.

Probably a fireman was first, maybe a Matchbox car racer... Ha... but I'm with Mari...

Did stuff to get by and realized one day they offered to pay me to do something more interesting than gas station attendant.

Never had a huge amount of choice in the matter. Job was a job. Three jobs was better.

We always lived in neighborhoods where everyone was talking about "What Johnny is going to be when he grows up" and all that stuff. It was awkward.

We kept everyone fed in the house and never had any serious "want", but college was on my dime, and who knew if I'd even be able to afford it, etc.

Anyway, now I wear lots of hats. Some fit better than others. ;)

Flying bug hit early, and came and went in various forms. The current form is "dork burning money in the sky in a 182" which is fine by me.

I wanted to be a professional pilot for a while, then just wanted anything in aviation. I have that now, and get to hang out at so many airports. Now if only I could build more flight hours and fly corporate or something.

I wanted to be a skid row drunk. Worked hard at it, but failed miserably. :dunno:

Decided to go to school and work and start my own business. I consider myself a complete failure. ;)

When I was about 8 or 9, my father, who was a career US Forest Service officer, took me to see a friend of his who was flying a Kaman Husky. I got to sit in the right seat as he did the prefilght, then stood with my Dad as he fired it up and flew away. I knew then I HAD to fly a helicopter. Got lucky and had a blast, (most of the time), doing just that, and more.

First post, yay! I wanted to be a combat pilot. Attack. Either Strike Eagle or A-10. Was leaning more towards Warthog. Grades sucked in school. Could never get it through my head to get my act together. So now I'm living a slow death as a steelworker in a dying town. Ah well. It pays ok. Enough for me to earn my ppl and maybe buy a Citabria. Might even work towards a commercial pilot rating.

Welcome to POA! Citabria would be a fun airplane to own. :)

From the time I was about 6, all I wanted to be was a Naval Aviator (long before Top Gun came out). Seemed pretty logical, I loved airplanes and ships.

Eyeglasses in high school kind of put a damper on that dream.

Mine was knee surgery at 12. What's really annoying is under today's standards they'd take me and likely you if Lazik could correct your vision.:( oh well, I would have probably just ended up lobbing a nuke at someone annoying...;)

I wanted to be Perry Mason. Remember watching withh my Mamma. Perry could not only get his client free.......but could make the guilty party confess in court.

Ended up spending 30 years in Law Enforcement, on the other side of Perry.

Like Speedy I wanted to be a lawyer but ended up as a software engineer. being doing it 30 years, started out writing assembly language and went from there.

Pilot of course! I was the only kid in kindergarten that new how to make a paper airplane. I was cool stuff! In honesty I actually couldn't decide whether to be a pilot, paleontologist, or study/train Killer Whales. I had dinosaurs, whales, and airplanes as toys...no barbies.

I don't remember what I probably said I wanted to be as a kid... I grew up on a dirt poor farm with a father that always had an airplane around so I didn't dream of being a pilot any more than I dreamed of being a farmer since those were were daily realities - and there wasn't any time for dreaming when the cows had to be milked 3 times a day...
Actually I kind of drifted through life... My father was dead when I was 16... I got through high school (barely - they seemed to have a problem with my only showing up for mid term and final exams and invited me to leave)... I have cooked in restaurants, dug ditches by hand (really), built houses, drove a semi hauling steel, run factory machinery, been an apprentice, been a journeyman, been a skilled trades foreman, been a corporate trouble shooter for a guy named Delorean, somewhere along the way lucked into a couple of university degrees, then a doctorate, then ran my own businesses (I have managed to lose money in just about every business known to man), and just like the Peter Principle predicted I have finally risen to my level of incompetence and I am now just a dirt poor farmer - uuuuh, with an airplane...
