My lovely wife and I were pondering the almost endless possibilities of ADS-B, with all of its lovely data transfer potential, when she mentioned weather data.

Bing -- the light bulb went on. My EFIS has outside air temperature and altitude data. It would be child's play to send that info to ADS-B out.

Think of it. Tens of thousands of flights, continuously airborne, all over the world, all reporting real-time temperature, altitude/barometric data. For the first time, the NWS would have a REAL model of the atmosphere -- not just a computer model extrapolating between a few dozen points.

The revolution in weather forecasting would be amazing.

What else can we do with this sort of capability?

Maybe they can finally predict accurate weather forcasts? Lol

Watch it Jay, you might get pilots to come on board with ADS-B, to the pleasure of the FAA
:D

There are already some airliners that have been equipped with technology to send actual atmospheric weather down.

but....you'd only get data for areas that have flyable weather.

Hmmm. I really like ADS-B.

Of course, I ditched certified aircraft, so I'm not spending insane amounts of money on stupid crap anymore. That makes a huge difference.

Could be a win /win deal.....

Since pilots have to pay for data from XM, I can see a revenue income stream to the owner of the ADS-B out transmitter.......;)

How long until we can get more (and better) data uploads, too?

If we can get NEXRAD, why not email?
