Waypoints - fun names

Kinda sorta.

OMMSI is on the approach to KPDX Rwy 28R, which puts it southeast of the airport. OMSI (the museum) is -- just barely -- in southeast Portland, on the east bank of the Willamette River. POWLZ is on the approach to 10R, so it's northwest of the airport; and Powell's Bookstore is in Northwest Portland (just barely -- it's on the north side of Burnside St., which is the dividing line between NW and SW).

And there's no known connection, but the KPDX ILS 10L procedure has a fix called BUXOM ... six NM south of a nude beach.

:dunno:

Nice, yeah that is what I was wondering. As an aside, I miss Powells......best bookstore ever!

Has anyone mentioned PICKN and GRNIN on the HEHAW Five arrival into Nashville? However, my favorite name for a navigational fix is the one the FAA named in honor of my wife - CZI :yes:

Powell's is gone? Leslie still has a T-shirt from there that a colleague got her, since she was holed up in the hotel room sick. We have one in Hyde Park (Chicago) that I thought was related in some way to the one out west.

No I just haven't lived in OR for a long time so I miss it :)

The RNAV (GPS) RWY 5 at Frederick, MD (AOPA HQ) has the following fixes:

I have always wondered about the genesis of the Mustang VOR at Reno. The official story is it honors the air races at Stead, BUT at the base of the hill the facility is sited on was another equally famous venue which also used the name "Mustang". :dunno:

I'm inclined to go with the venue at the bottom of the hill. :D

What is PHILB supposed to be?

Kinda clever........ At least tthe AOPA didn't try to go with the wine club theme...... we would have had.

Whine = Wine
Chese = Cheese
Crakr = Cracker
Botol = bottle.
Drunk = Drunk..:confused:

;):rofl::lol:

I don't think anyone caught this yet, but I know that one - It's the Crazy Woman VOR!

There are some football-related ones going into KCLL, IIRC...

My personal favorites are "mine" (KENTS in MI), and the one I often get cleared to to get around Chicago, KELSI - Kelsey is my fiancée. :)

Yeah.......... That crazy woman is my Ex......;):yes::rolleyes2:

I doubt the two are related, but it's funny anyway: I used to be based at Napa airport in CA (KAPC). Napa is also where Japan Airlines sends their new recruits to earn their PPL's and instrument ratings in Bonanzas and Barons. As you might imagine, most of these youngsters have quite thick Japanese accents, and they struggle with the waypoints on the most commonly used instrument approach, which are LYLLY and ROOSE.

I just looked and there is no "PORNO" waypoint?! Did the FAA think that'd be inappropriate?!

Sure there is...... it is the final approach fix for John Holmes International..

It is put there so you can clear the 12" obsticle...:yes:;)

Around NOLA they have VOODO, RHTHM, AWDAD(?crawdad), and FATSO(?Fat Tuesday). In Florida GATORS VOR(Gainsville), and then near Daytona they have WORMS, DIGGR, PRKKS. Tampa has ENDED. In the Fort Myers area we have JOCKS, VASES, PINTS, and HICUP. Miami area has HEATT, the DOLPHIN VOR, and LUVLY.

About 25 years ago a new STAR was issued for, IIRC, JFK. The fix was STIFF, the STAR was the STIFF ONE arrival. When it first appeared on the strips I had to go look to see who was working the sector to my west, I felt somebody had to be messing with me. It was legit, but it was soon revised.

Years ago the Grand Island FBO at GRI was run by a very popular lady who later died of cancer. People at the airport petitioned the FAA to change the IAF name on the ILS to 35 to honor her memory. I think her name was Nancy and the IAF is named SANCY.

I did my long IFR cross-country into Martinsburg, WV (KMRB ) . The ILS OM is Heven. So the controller told me to let him know when I reached HEVEN.

I fly C-5s based out of KMRB. When flying the ILS 26, we report "almost HEVEN", a nod to John Denver's "Country Roads" - a West Virginia anthem.

Saw on one of the King Schools charts they have for examples there is a "BORGE" (Star Trek reference?)

Discovered a "MIKIE" waypoint on ILS 25 for KTOL. Evidentally you DO NOT "eat Life cereal at that waypoint"

The Family guy character is not a waypoint on VOR 4 at KTDZ either.

Live and learn :)

Here in the Augusta Georgia area (KAGS), home of the Masters Golf Tournament, we have a lot of golf references in our waypoints.

MSTRS = Masters
JUNPR = Juniper - 6th hole of the Augusta National Course
DWOOD = Dog Wood - 11th hole of the Augusta National Course
RDBUD = Redbud - 16th hole of the Augusta National Course
BARDE = Birdie - One Under Par for a Hole
BRDYE = Birdie - One Under Par for a Hole
PARRR = Par
EAGAL = Eagle - Two Under Par for a Hole
BOGII = Bogie - One Over Par for a Hole
PGAAA = PGA - Professional Golf Assoc
EZZGO = Ez-Go Golf Cart Factory in Augusta
CLUBC = Club Car Golf Cart Factory in Augusta
SWTEA = Sweet Tea (it’s a southern thing) :wink2:
SWANG = Swing - how you hit the ball but with a super heavy southern drawl ;)
FOURR = What you yell just before your ball hits someone. :rolleyes: Yea, I know it's not the right spelling, but just poking some fun.

The SAMMI TWO Departure is:
TRPLE -> BOGII -> SAMMI
I think it is referring to Sam Snead who lost a US Open on the final hole by shooting a triple bogie when all he needed was a par to win the tournament.

Some Daniel Field (KDNL) waypoints:
AZALA = Azalea - 13th hole of the Augusta National Course
PMPAS = Pampas - 7th hole of the Augusta National Course
NDINA = Nandina - 17th hole of the Augusta National Course
AMENN = Amen Corner – part of the Augusta National back nine holes
NKLAS = Jack Nicklaus

One time I had a controller ask me if I was at PANIC yet.

A little unsettling for the pax.
