I'm flying into Atlanta specifically Charlie Brown field (KFTY) on the west side of Atlanta from Zephyrhills Fl to take my son and his friend to Six Flags late next month. Not my cup of tea at my age so i'll let them go while I go find something to do for the day. Any suggestions on things to do and the general airspace. This will be the first time I venture into the Atlanta area so any tips would be helpful
Thx

How long will you be here? Overnight?
What specific date(s)?
What ground transportation will you and your son have once here?
What do you like to do?

There is everything from museums to an indoor sky diving simulators, world famous aquarium, Coca Cola museum/tourist what not, etc. Delta museum down by the airport isn't bad.

Given the traffic, I'd personally just Uber everywhere BTW.

As far as the airspace, are you flying IFR? If so, the nice ATL controllers will get you through/around the Bravo. This is the worlds busiest or second busiest airport's airspace, depending on how you count things. If not IFR, at least get VFR following. KFTY should be easy to get to, but keep in mind they have several other airports around, especially Dobbins Airforce base. Mind your altitude carefully, as lots of IFR departures from these other airports are a wee bit low around KFTY.

End of october so really only one saturday. I will probably uber around if I have to. I plan to fly there VFR with FF.

You're getting mega "Dad Points" for this. For just a day trip, I'd schlep to downtown for the Aquarium or CocaCola museum.

BTW - if only for the day, when are you arriving and departing? Sounds like you'll be doing some night flying - good excuse to get night current. And keep a sharp eye on altitude on that west Bravo shelf you'll be flying under. The runways at ATL/Hartsfield are all East/West, so you'll be flying under the main flight paths when you go south to north on the west side of ATL.

Thx, I'm leaving a friday and coming back sunday. Saturday my son and his friend will go to the park and I will find something to do. I fly a Grumman Traveler in a club so that's the whole point I got into the club to be able to fly further on a budget. When my son first asked me about doing the trip I looked and noted that Six flags looks to be pretty close to the base leg of that airport. I will not fly my family at night, i'm fairly risk adverse. I plan on leaving friday AM, fuel stop mid way and get into Atlanta hopefully late morning early afternoon and the same on the way back. Foreflight says about 3 hrs but you know how aviation is.

FTY is not in the best area safety wise. And going to six flags takes you through some not great areas. Not dangerous but pay attention to your surroundings.

Not much to see or do in that part of town other than Six Flags. You could drop them off and then fly down to Peach State - grass strip with an on-field restaurant and usually has some activity on Saturdays - then head back up to FTY to pick your parkers up.

It isn’t a great area, but isn’t Compton or the South side of Chicago.

Thanks for the tips you guys, I lived in Cali, Colombia in the 80's and go back every year so i'm not too worried. haha;);):p:p:blueplane::cool:
