Vision Jet Attempts T/O on Closed Runway, Driggs-Reed (ID), 8/14/26

Airport only has one runway? What’s he supposed to use the taxiway?

Don't know what the situation was when he took off, but only part of the runway is closed now:

Runway 04/22 SW 3451FT Closed. Declared Distance: Runway 04 TORA 3850FT TODA 3850T ASDA 3850FT LDA 3850FT. Runway 22 TORA 3850FT TODA 3850FT ASDA 4018FT LDA 3850FT.

Doesn't give a reason. VisionJet debris on the runway might be it.

Possibly part of the runway was open and he used the wrong part.

That's the same NOTAM. I just pasted mine from weathermeister that translates some of the abbreviations.

Back when I was based at IAD, there was a time when the (then) 1L runway had a 6000' displaced threshold for construction work (they were building the connections over to the new western parallel runay). It was eerie flying over a mile of asphalt before touching down.

Construction is going on on the SW end of the runway, so they have the runway shortened to 3850 ft. My guess is he tried to depart from the threshold of Runway 4 into the construction zone. There should have been barricades blocking the taxiway entrance to the runway, so were they missing or did he taxiway through them.

Yeah, but ultimately equipment or construction debris on the runway is what we used to call a "clue".

hey an aside
notam says rnav rwy 4 no lpv & no lnav
does that mean circle is ok? (they didn’t say rnav4 unavailable, just lpv & lnav)

Seeing else where that what he hit was on the end of the runway that was not notamed closed. This, if true does change the fault quite a bit.

TFA says he entered the closed section and started to takeoff.

Usually I see physical barriers across taxiways that one would have difficulty taxiing over.
Maybe it was only paint or signs and physical barriers are not a standard?

Wouldn't a Vision Jet likely have updated Garmin taxi maps or equivalent?

Accident SF50 is listed as a 2023 G2+. There should have been no deficit of modern tech onboard.

Entry point onto the runway used by the SF50 was about 2,260 ft from the threshold of runway 4, well within the NOTAM’d 3,451 ft SW portion of the runway.

As the old adage says, there are three useless things to a pilot:
Altitude above you, fuel you left behind, and runway ahead of you that you can't get to because there's construction material in the way.

And this would help how?
It should show the closed section or at least runway taxi situation awareness. But maybe there is no airport diagram/map for KDIJ?

What makes you think a runway NOTAM is going to be depicted on a chart?

It does not always work correctly. We were in AUS Monday and Tuesday. They had the following NOTAM: "KAUS 07/125 AUS TWY C BTN TWY S AND TWY Z CLSD LGTD AND BARRICADED 2607230400-2702281200" We could not find TWY Z on our charts. GP showed all of TWY C closed but they were using it. We were only on the east side of the airport, so it did not bother us.
