I just got a notice from Twitter that @FAANews just tweeted...

"FAA Clears Santa for Takeoff in his new NexGen-Equipped Sleigh"

Could the self-pandering be any more pitiful? Really?

And of course the hashtag: #FlyNexGen

Do they really need PR people to push an already funded project of dubious benefit?

Couldn't we find those PR folk some nice jobs making cute tweets for beleaguered police departments or something?

Thats just silly. Everyone knows that Santa is NORDO and flies VFR with a little scud running....

I mean he has flown the same route for many, many years.

Rudolph is there when the visibility goes down....:lol:

Incorrect. Santa has RNAV.

Santa Claus does have some very bush pilot tendencies, although if he was a real bush pilot he would steal booze instead of cookies.

Does he have ADSB out installed ?

Is this cute little tweet really that upsetting to you?? Do you demand norad stop doing their santa thing too because it must mean norad is completely useless? Relax.

It doesn't matter, if they do nothing the accusation is "See these lazy government workers doing nothing!", and if they are trying to do something we see something like this thread.

There is no winning.

If FAA tweets are so bothersome, why follow @FAANews?

Standard catch 22. No matter what you do, someone is going to find something they don't like about it.

ADSB really upsets me. Big expense on our shoulders for almost no benefit whatsoever. Moreover, we are now highly susceptible to any damage of the constellation of GPS satellites, which are of limited life span and nearly impossible to fix if they malfunction or are attacked by an unfriendly power.

I wonder if pilots said the same thing when the FAA mandated the 4096 code transponder, or the VOR in lieu of the LFR.

That is certainly one perspective. Another valid perspective is that someone wants to have real news, not self-promoting fluff, from the FAA.

Good point. You should forward your concerns to

800 Independence Avenue
Washington, DC

Merry Christmas!

Sorry, not playing. Or buying this lie.

Clearly there are hundreds of things the FAA does that I don't mind at all. Marketing to say "look at me, look at me, see how cool I am spending taxpayer dollars?" by any government agency, is wholly unnecessary and quite expensive, for zero net purpose.

This tired old whine that it's about everything they do, is just that. Tired and old and inaccurate.

I'd be just fine defunding the Twitter team at FAA. I wouldn't be fine with defunding ATC. I also wouldn't be interested in defunding inspectors.

There's quite a significant difference. Your former role served a purpose. Someone running a Twitter account? Not so much.

Probably not. No Twitter back then and no FAA staff officially announcing it on Compuserve. LOL

But yet you subscribe........

Which is exactly why they are pushing it.....

If you like your tweets, you can keep your tweets..:mad2::mad2:

At first I thought Nate was having some fun. That's not like him, but I thought maybe in the Christmas spirit and all... Personally, I thought it was kind of funny and in good humor.

Having a twitter account is part of the problem. And the only part of the problem you can fix.

Twitter.

To be honest, I don't have a clue as to what a "twitter" does or how it works. :dunno:

I do know I don't have one, nor do I care to have one, and no one forces me to use it.

So if you have a "twitter" does various entities send you stuff you don't request? :dunno:
That's fine. I think the point is you and other taxpayers are still funding someone at FAA to send out the tweet.

+1 twitter person is -1 controller. Unless you believe in unlimited taxation, it's all about tradeoffs.

Again, if they do nothing, the answer is "see, they're not telling us anything!"

If they do something, then it's "see, they're wasting money"......

And it's not like any of us have fun on the job. You know, like hanging around POA while on the clock.

You really think this person's only job at the FAA is sending cute twitter messages?? No. It's a collateral duty as part of likey many other duties. Relax.

Oh come on.... Last time I saw, the FAA had 76,000 + employees... I can assure you, they are all not controllers or inspectors...:no::nonod:

Ok this is slightly OT but...

Why does a government agency have ad time? I understand a PSA but why would the government advertise or engage in branding? Are they afraid we'll take our business to a different government agency overseeing aviation?

Your number is off. By a lot.

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/aba/admin_factbook/media/201206.pdf

FY 2011 47,232 employees.

FY 2012 47,031 employees.

Seems the trend is heading downward, not upward.

I wasn't aware government agencies used advertisement time.

Uhh, you do realize they sent out that Santa had ADS-B, right? Not exactly timely news or useful.

You kinda have to keep up to understand the point. Waste. Of. Time. Paying someone to do it.

As far as "subscribing", Twitter is free. I follow a number of aviation folk on there, from back when the podcast was a going thing.

The FAA tweet came from a "here's what's trending in your community" automated guess by Twitter at extra supposedly "interesting" content. Until then I never sought out the FAA on Twitter. What would the FAA put on Twitter that was even slightly useful? Twitter is useless for them.

They have my address. And probably some stamps. Even have my phone number somewhere too, I'm sure.

The only possible use for Twitter for FAA is self-pats-on-the-back. (Frankly that's what most celebrities and what not use it for, too.) It's not a medium well suited for official communications. 140 character messages are pretty limiting.

About all its good for is Marketing, and posting links to websites.

But you've admitted you don't even know what it is, so I'm being nice and explaining it.

Your assumptions are already mostly wrong about it, therefore the argument that they need to be doing it is pretty weak.

Ever heard of a Ad Council? Now if you want a REAL waste of money, check into that one sometime.

They put out those hit commercials like, "Never shake a baby" and "Stop eating lead paint, you've turned into a retard".

Millions of dollars a year. Lots of millions.

Count your blessings the FAA didn't use Twitter to announce a world-wide TFR from SFC to FL600 for Santa's deliveries.
