Happy birthday to the Air Force 68 years young.

I was at an industry association lunch yesterday with a Naval officer as the speaker. He referred to the Air Force as a teenager by comparison with the other services...

Still a baby compared to Army Aviation.

Let's see, the US Air Force was born on 18 September 1947, and Army Aviation was born on 6 June 1942. Damn, you're right! Army Aviation is positively ancient compared to the USAF.

A good friend of mind (BG, USA) refers to the Air Force as, "The alternative to military service." :-)

He's also fond of quoting "No Time for Sergeants": "The Ayah Foce is just the Ahmy's helpers...."

The Air Force separated from the Army Air Corp. My dad served in both, discharged from the Army one day and inducted into the AF the next.

He served over 20yrs total. Myself and one of my brothers have each served 20+ in the AF. We are now both retired.

In 1942 the United States Army was divided functionally into three components; the Army Air Forces, the Army Ground Forces, and the Services of Supply (later renamed Army Service Forces). Not everything that flew belonged to the Army Air Forces. Field artillery units of the Army Ground Forces had organic aviation, spotter aircraft. That was the birth of the present-day United States Army Aviation Branch. The USAAF was separated from the Army in 1947 as the United States Air Force.
