twin down in Bowie Texas. father/son killed

I'd rather not speculate as to the cause, but contributing factor could have been time in type. Looks like he registered this plane just this month. Very sad situation.

You can't help but wonder if they would have survived without the fire. The now infamous USA Today article spent a lot of time covering that issue. I can't disagree that plane crashes would be more survivable if we could solve the post-crash fire. It may not have helped here, but who can tell for sure?

Diesel recip engines would go a very long way to reducing post accident fires.

I heard years ago that [insert company here] was working on creating a fuel that when agitated to an extreme extent would gel preventing if from spreading as easily as liquid.

I don't recall the details and certainly questions of turbulence, etc come to mind but I recall hearing about it around the time of the souix city crash. Anyone recall this?

That thing planted. Outside of stalling out at 25' and pitching into the dirt directly he had to have come in vertically and flat. Those are the only two possibilities I see so far. I don't see even 10' of scuff marks from touch to where he sits.

Too expensive for the effectiveness.

A lot of people who don't fly frequently choose to fly VFR, quite sensible choice IMO, even if the plane is well equipped and capable. It's not easy to even maintain currency unless you fly frequently.

I also noticed the lack of marking which would indicate forward momentum. This led me to believe the aircraft stalled and spun in, and just happened to land flat.

The NTSB preliminary report indicates this is what happened:

A witness was watching the airplane when it suddenly pointed straight down, began spinning, and made three complete rotations before impacting the ground. The witness also reported seeing flames immediately after impact. Evidence at the scene showed the airplane had impacted in a nose down attitude, came to rest upright, and was mostly consumed by a postimpact fire.

The tragedy is magnified when one considers the loss of the small boy and his father. My condolences to the family and friends.
