Turkey Shoots Down Russian Fighter Plane

Those Turkish F16 pilots must be quite the speed talkers. A jet flies a what, 400 mph? Looking at the map where the shoot down occurred & the flight path that the Turkish new agency provided, the Russians could not have been over Turkey for more than 2 miles--what is that, 18 seconds? Which would be 9 seconds of heading into Turkish airspace and 9 seconds heading out.

I think, and I don't know where I saw it, the Russian aircraft had been circling and crossing in and out of Turkish airspace several times. But, yeah, that's a tiny corner for all the trouble that's come of it.
 
Turkish radar shows one track, Russian shows another.

Go figure.

The Russian chart seems to show their aircraft was 1-4km outside the border, and Turkey says it crossed.

Turkey shoot eh? Wonder how many Americans were in the radar/missile/piloting circle? Definitely some global warming going on...
 
Normally, I'd say a shoot down (after warning) is valid, but for _2_ miles!? Seems like Turkey looking for a fight.

Why not call up the Russians and tell them "it better not happen again", fire some warning shots, or "escort" the aircraft out of the area?
 
Is this going to involve is getting dragged into another contractors war?
 
The problem is that Russian pilots have been repeatedly violating Turkish airspace ever since they arrived. Despite numerous warnings from Turkey, the Russians kept violating their airspace and were pretty much snubbing their noses at Turkey.

The reason for the shootdown is because the Russians were bombing ethnic Turks inside Syria, entering into Turkish airspace was the excuse, look for Putin to bomb the Turks in Syria in retaliation.

Does not help that, according to NPR this evening, they shot and killed one of the crew as he was coming down under a chute. Don't know if the "they" are Turkish civilians or military. Either way, clear violation of LOAC.
 
It will al be settled next week during the climate change conference.

Yup.

It's a proxy war going on in Syria. Turkey was arming and supporting those ethnic Turks. They were the Turkish proxy.

This proxy war is just itching to become a broader war among the proxy sponsors. The shootdown is a step in that direction.
 
I just hope it's not the start of World War III. :eek:

The Russians also lost a helicopter and crewman to ground fire during the S&R operations.

I just hope obama has the sense to stay out of it if it blows up. It is bad enough we are in Iraq and Syria but we need to get out of those pos countries and not get involved in another.
 
A complication is that Turkey is a NATO member.

If Russia retaliates things could get interesting.

Turkey did it right and left little for Russia to retaliate against. If they had used one of the PAC-3 batteries then it would be a different story...

I read on Yahoo news that it was the rebels fighting against Assad that killed the downed Russian aviator. This gives Turkey some cover. The other aviator is still missing it seems, but I doubt he will fare any better.

Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told local news agencies that the pilot was rescued in a 12-hour operation which ended Wednesday. Shoigu said the airman is now "safe and sound" at Russia’s air base in Syria.

"The operation was successful. The engineer was delivered to our air base, he is alive and well. I wanted to thank all our boys, who were working all night with great risk. At 3:04 a.m. (local time) they completed their work," Shoigu said.

If it's true that Russia has been violating Turkish airspace on a regular basis, and that Turkey has been warning them about it, then the only thing this episode really did was make Russia look bad on TV. That might make a difference on how this all plays out.

We can drop White Phosphorus on them using a technicality in the rules and then we expect them to follow the rules to the intent.;) Accidental discharge while covering the pilot perhaps? Who knows what kind of gun handling safety they practice out there?:rolleyes:

What's that mean? Last that I recall that language being used, it ended up with an indictment of a soverign leader (Milosevic).

Putin shot down an airliner to make a point. I doubt that he cares what it looks like on TV.
