I'm sorry if I stole your picture. But this just amazed me... With all the technology on the panel of this airplane still an iPad is in use!

Tens of thousands of dollars of panel mounted instrumentation, but still have to use an iPad. Amazing.

Dude is still rocking a Narco, of course he has an iPad.

There are a couple of important things that the 650 and Aspen don't do. Like tell you altitude or direction of turns for traffic patterns, or MEAs.

That is a very capable panel, and it would be silly to use the iPad for navigation with that much more capable 650 available. Now, for displaying charts and airport information, it's useful.

I don't have as nice a panel as that but have a Aspen and 530 and mx20 and weather radar and I still use a iPad and stratus 2. In fact I carty two iPads. I find passengers like to follow our course and enjoy looking at our speeds and alt. also double weather doesn't hurt either. I seem to get vectored a lot lately also and it's kind of nice to see quickly what they are telling me. Nice scratchpad too.

So what kind of airplane is that? Is that pistol grip lever to the left of the prop control the throttle? Makes sense that it would be but I have never seen one like that.

Airliners carry iPads as EFBs. The panel doesn't do everything, and often times it's preferable to just look things up on the iPad to going into the system.

if my tablet had comm capability it might be the only instrument I use (well, you know what I mean).

of course, I rent, so it's made bouncing from plane to plane rather easy.

The only type I know with the engine instruments and gear lever in those positions is the Mooney.

You know what that panel doesn't tell me?...fuel prices at nearby airfields...as well as hotels and FBO services.

iPad still has its place regardless of how much panel you have.

We have a 750 and an Aspen in the BE35.

I use my ipad with a stratus on every flight. Traffic and synthetic vision is a good addition.

It is very inexpensive back up.

This. And weather. It is slot more expensive to add weather to the fancy instruments on that panel than the iPad.

I still use my iPad with fore flight even if I have a g1000 waas synthetic vision panel with all the XM goodies.

That is what I would have guessed.

What's up with that throttle? Or am I looking at it wrong?

Without an iPad, how else could that pilot view charts and plates?

Same way I do. And yes electronically. Oh and I can install it on as many devices as I like. I currently have it on 4.

Its only a few hundred bucks and gives you another screen! :) I love my Ipad. It just does things quicker and easier at times than the Garmin Perspective system I have. Plus, it gets me closer to being as cool as these guys.

My iPad is my most used aviation device. To the point where I will be installing 2x of these new docks when I do the new panel:

https://www.flypadmount.com

Actually would like to have 3 mounts installed, but that's taking up too much real estate. That way I could have:

Ipad1: Low level enroute IFR chart
Ipad2: Approach plate.
Ipad3: VFR chart for situational awareness.

How many times haven't you wanted VFR charts viewable at the same time as the IFR chart? How many times haven't you gone "hmm, wonder what that little airport/town down there is called?". No way of knowing on an IFR chart. Or just to know where the mountains actually are on that circling approach? Invaluable.

And if you want to watch a movie, well, then you need 4 iPads mounted!!

I'm gonna punt cunch whoever posted the 8 million pixel wide picture.

430,530.aspen ,still use the I pad with stratus. Can't have enough help in the cockpit, especially while single pilot IFR.

My aircraft is already equipped with a panel mount garmin 430w and I have an iPad mini + stratus.

Explain what tens of thousands of dollars in avionics upgrades would give me that I don't already have(besides an autopilot.... I wish I had an autopilot)

I'm guessing you're neither instrument rated nor have much experience with an iPad and associated aviation software. An iPad doesn't replace cockpit technology, and a fancy avionics stack doesn't obviate the need for apps like foreflight.

...or at least I've never seen someone pull a G1000 out of the panel and take it home to do flight planning.

I have a G600 and both a 650 and 750, I carry my iPad on every flight.:D It has all my charts, including approach plates. Plus it's a back up if the power goes out.

true. I like the idea that the ipad/stratus are a 100% separate system from the plane.

A lighter wallet. Haha

I rock a iPad mini and stratus 2. I have no panel mount GPS and fly airways on longer xc. When on an airway i tune in my vor's and fly the needles. But..I use the iPad the most as it is more accurate than my needles. And the iPad gives me all the info I need.

And man yeah do I wish I had an autopilot. Next plane will!

we have a nice, expensive multifunction display coupled to the GPS. It's only use is to display the XM weather, it's so costly to have ifr charts on it I think we all just use our ipads. Complete waste of money on the MFD IMO.

I have had my ipad overheat a couple times on my lap though, which makes me REAL nervous

Flying in mississippi in the summer and I have yet to have my iPad overheat. Now my stratus has overheated once. I had to move it to the floor but still got GPS signal. I think I was sticking it to close to the windscreen so it couldn't breathe.

I don't know what the deal is with my ipad 2. It's not hot on the face so it's not sun, it's hot on the back.
One time I was charging it so I thought the heat from charging maybe. Another time I wasn't. One thing I've done that helps is dim the screen down manually as dim as I can and still see it. Helps with battery and seems to help with heat.
I'd step up to an air 2 but I think those run hotter?

It's kind of hard to troubleshoot because it doesn't seem to happen too often. Maybe the new IOS is just taxing the processor too much and creating extra heat, I dunno.
