Thinking about fish for my pond...

So regarding aeration... anyone have experience car with a windmill aerator? They all say they can be 1000 ft from the pond. True? False?

The best places to put the windmill are near the house and that’s about 600 ft from the pond.

As usual I’m lacking in the humor department. I was jokingly suggesting to stock a pond with filets and steaks.....of any kind. Just happened to pick salmon/tuna.

Haha, no sir. I'm lacking in the reading skills department. Totally read it wrong.

The places I learn things! Tripoliod has a very special meaning to us geneticists, it denotes three sets of chromosomes. You are all (hopefully) diploid, meaning you have two sets of chromosomes. Triploidy in humans is lethal, indeed having an extra chromosome is incompatible with viability except for chromosome 21 and the sex chromosomes (the Y chromosome is small and end poor, too many X chromosomes are inactivated epigenetically). I would not have thought you could create a viable triploid vertebrate until this evening. Many thanks for something I didn’t know

My daughter has three X sex chromosomes. Good to know they are not fatal!
Seriously, we were pretty concerned when we found out, but all the info I was able to find shows that it's pretty benign, other than they tend to grow tall (she's tall!) and tend to have a bit lower IQ than average. The same syndrome in men (XYY) I believe was once considered a "crime gene" because there were more men with this condition in prison than in the general population. My daughter has not shown any inclination for crime, and is graduating Cum Laude this May from college, so things are looking good.
On a funny note, when we found out, we told my dad, who had just gotten a computer and was connected to the Internet, so he decided to Google "XXX Sex chromosome." I told him before he hit "Enter" that he wasn't going to get the results he was looking for. In less then a second he got about 50,000 porn site hits!

I remember studying all those different trisomy sex chromosomes in my genetics class, and also recall the XYY combination being really common for criminal tendencies. I don't recall any of the XXX/XXXX combinations having that issue.

As far as I know this in non syndromic. The young lady in question might be a bit taller, but evidence normal sexual development and fecundity. I am unaware of any proven effect on cognition. However, should she have children there is a good chance any sons will exhibit Klinefelters, which is XXY and is indeed syndromic. It is possible to avoid this by in vitro fertilization and embryo screening.

The issue just isn't all that simple. And extra Y chromosome does tend to make man taller, and that's about the only thing I can find that anyone agrees on. There are some studies that say they're at a lower IQ, others that don't. The ones claiming and enrichment in prison populations took place in prisons examined in the 70s. There are plenty of more recent studies that found no effect.

Interesting. As with many things in science, the current beliefs depend on the studies, and new studies bring new data which may refute previous data, etc.

So I'll keep on having eggs and coffee for breakfast, although I have cut down on sugar.

I had a chat with the local fishery about the situation and I suspect we're going to go down there this weekend to buy some fish. He recommended the triploid carp and then stock the pond for fishing. Basically the combination there will eat everything in sight to keep things under control and then we have the option of going fishing in the pond if we're so inclined. I think that's a win-win. Even though I'm not much of a fisherman, I'd like to be able to take the kids down there and go fishing with them some. They've expressed interest and it is a fun, relaxing thing to do. The pond is plenty big enough for a row boat and fishing in it. Need to do some more clearing to make it easier to get to.
