Thanks TSA: 3000+ checked bags stuck at KPHX

Yep, they have to resort to hunting through them by hand looking for things to steal. It slows the process down immensely.

Odds of a coordinated cyber attack and bomb in a bag? I'll take those odds, somebody should grow a pair and load the friggin' bags. Somebody should have nominated TSA (edit: ALL of DHS) for some Tony awards, would have blown Hamilton's records away.

Haha. I saw them sitting there today. It looked like a yard sale. Didnt know what was going on.

Do checked bags go through different screening than carry ons? I would think Tucson would be closer than anyplace in California to scan baggage.

Setting those bags out in the PHX sun for while should render everything inside inert.

Report I heard said that a server crashed, bringing screening to a halt. Sigh.

Think the terrorists on that day had any idea that our own overblown response to their acts would have such a long lasting negative effect?

Seeing lots of rumblings of airports (finally) wanting to move to private security.

So the entire operation depended on one server. You can't make this up.

I trust they are making everybody "stay with their bags" :D

No one could have foreseen this idiocy. It is extreme even by government standards of idiocy.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel soooo much safer.

I find it ironic that after coming up with ultra-secure cockpit doors to protect pilots from their passengers, there is now so much pee-in-the-bottle psychology effort going into protecting passengers from their pilots.

Seriously, this was one of the factors that motivated the purchase of my twin. I will do just about anything to avoid the airlines and the hassle of airport "security" screening unless I have to go overseas.

It's okay. The bags won't get there any sooner than the passengers can get through the security lines themselves.

Yes. The checked bags are screened primarily for explosives by a CTX scanner which uses technology similar to a medical CT scan which is analyzed by computer software. Carry on bags are screened primarily for weapons and rely on the operator's interpretation of the x-ray image.

This is why it is important to make sure your carry-on bag has the appropriate gate-check tag when gate checking on a regional flight. If it doesn't have the gate-check tag then it can not be given back to you at the airplane on arrival and must go to baggage claim due to checked bags not being screened for weapons.

Next time they're going to leave the passengers outside in the heat and run the bags through the scanners, then bus the passengers wherever.

Maybe TSA will fly their own cargo jets, trailing whatever flight the pax are on? A cargo glider towed behind each commercial flight? Would be interesting.

What's even more important to check is that you remove any previous baggage tags from the bag. Arriving at MIA from EYW they didn't want to give me my bag back even with the gate check tag because it had a luggage sticker on it. What was worse is that the sticker had a destination of EYW not IAD which was where I was eventually travelling. My bags would have been lost in paradise if I hadn't been insistant on the ramp monkey.

Oh, I do not underestimate terrorists. Obviously, these guys were smart and foresaw that one attack of that magnitude would be enough to f*** up the whole country for decades.

You won, terrorists, you won!
Now enjoy your 70 virgins, margaritas and free tacos or whatever y'all say you get in your kind of terrorist heaven.

This, and other reasons, is why I always carry on. Planning to do it on a 3 1/2 week international trip. Others were amazed that I would try, but I'm a light packer.

Yes, it can be done. We only take carry-ons for our Europe trips, even taking into consideration the more stringent size and weight limits for carry-ons on European carriers. It is liberating!

Excellent tips for packing light here.

I've checked a bag for three trips in the last 15 years. Checked two bags for a 3 week trip to Sweden with my wife because there is no such thing as a laundromat in Sweden. (Slight hyperbole, but only slight!). Checked a bag with snorkel gear for 6 to Hawaii last summer because it was cheaper than renting gear for all the times we went snorkeling. (And the gear was much better than the rental gear!) If it got delayed, no biggie. Checked my suit fold over bag for a 3 week business trip to Australia this year. Suits travel better in these bags and they are just a little too big for carry on. If there's a better way, illuminate me!

Carryon is the only way to go. I'll do multiweek trips with a carry on. Laundromats and hotel laundry services exist for a reason.

one doofus on a flight a few years back was being obstinate when he couldn't find bin space above his seat. he wanted others to move their bags so he could be near his. o_O

The same guy would hold up an evacuation trying to save his bag.

I've seen that, but I've also seen folks sitting at the back of the plane stick their bags up front because they don't want to carry them all the way to their seats. That's even more douchy IMO.

One guy on a JetBlue flight I was on out of BOS actually removed bags from the bin, left them in the aisle, and put his in the bin. He was in the second row - the bags he removed belonged to the people in the first row (bulkhead). Needless to say, there was a scene but the flight attendant took care of it and comped drinks for the folks in the front row. Ugly and arrogant.
