Tchaikovsky's, The Nutcracker

Always one of my most favorite.

I'm always on the look out for a well played rendition. Unfortunately, St Petersburg is out of my budget for this year. (St Pete, Russia for you peasants)

As beautiful as the music is, it is a ten times better treat to see the ballet during the Christmas season!

Alas, it's been a few years since we had a really good production of the Nutcracker here in Orlando. Video of ballet just doesn't cut it.

Thanks Richard... You just inspired me to fire up iTunes. First up was my favorite part of the Nutcracker, the Pas de Deux. It would be difficult to find a more beautiful cello melody, soaring over the rest of the orchestra. (Dart: Videotaped ballet? That's right up there with my biggest disappointment the last time I saw it live: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies on a friggin' synth instead of celeste.)

Anyway... I hadn't had enough Tchaik yet, so I listened to the Allegro con Fuoco from his 4th Symphony performed by the New York Phil with Leonard Bernstein conducting. I got in the mood for happy classical and queue up some Shostakovich - Festive Overture, of course. Now I'm listening to Phillip Sparke's Festval Variations, performed by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. See what you started? ;) :D

And it's a long trip from the west coast. 11 time zones, too. :( BTDT. Talk about jet lag.

One of my fantasy vacations is to see the great symphonies played in the best venues around the world. And Christmas time for viewing The Nutcracker. Not many things in life would beat that.

My sister being a professional ballet dancer, and Nutcracker being the staple of ballet companies, especially in the US (hey, they have bills to pay...), I have seen more Nutcrackers than I care to remember.

Still, you're right- the music with the dance is still something special.

Ah, the Nutcracker. I'm good for about 5 minutes then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

But that's just me. :D

The freakin' rats give me nightmares!
I'm naked in a dark cave with a rat the size of a German shepard coming after me and I can't get to my spear!

> PLUGH

You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and down a gully.

The lights go out. It is now totally dark and you have just been eaten by a Grue.
