Tax Preparation Options

I use Turbo Tax, Home and Business Edition ($65, this year). I went to a pro the year I moved between states and bought a house, but was disappointed with what the level of service I got for about $400 (I had to correct him to be sure I got my full deductions).

My brother-in-law paid about $400 one year for H&R Block, which I thought was hilarious considering the level of training of their "seasonal employees", who did little more than handle the data entry for him into the same software he could have bought from them for $50.

Okay, so as an update, I was able to figure out the issue that I was having. The second website I tried actually automatically gave me a deduction that I was eligible for. I had to manually select it in Turbo Tax, but once I did, the figures agreed. I feel better now, lol.

This is a timely thread. Hope you don't mind me piggy-backing for a moment.

I have a relationship with the owner of a CPA firm who is offering to prepare my taxes for $195. I have always prepared my own return but this seems like a good rate. I typically owe every year and I believe my tax situation to be dead simple compared to most.

I am unmarried, don't own a home, and have a tiny amount of investments. My income is primarily salary, with a bit of 1099. The nature of my job causes some bleed-over in personal/business use on stuff (cell phone, vehicle travel, home computer use, etc.). I bought a used car (dealer) and a jet ski (Craigslist) last year.

Is it worth it to allow him to prepare my return? I'm not interested in the time savings, just the tax situation.

Thanks.

It never asked me about it. Only when I clicked on the option to learn more about it did it tell me that according to the data they'd collected that I was eligible for it. You don't know what you don't know I guess.
