Tax Assessment - OUCH!

Hmm.... could have stated it better. I care about total cost to me.
It could just be a display thing, might be actual differences in rates, never dug into it enough to care. But as a tourist, I see much higher taxes in FL than what I see in TX. e.g. taxes on hotel and rental cars. And that appears to make the costs in FL actually higher than TX.
If the Florida legislature raises the tourist taxes even more, it will likely preclude me planning additional trips there beyond what I have already reserved.

Texas is another story. Assumed Santa Fe was in New Mexico. I’m still confused.

I too am wondering how they are going to get rid of property taxes and their solution to that. Most people here are not very bright and have no idea how these things work. I just flew into williston(x60) a couple of weeks ago and I see that they built a large FBO there. From what I heard it was partly a government grant. In any case if you go to Williston there is literally nothing there so i'm curious what was wrong with the old FBO.

There are a lot of rich folks around there. The horse breeding and training draws them in. They have a jet maintenance practice. It's pretty common to see one guy fly in on a jet or turboprop by himself or with a small family.

lol, sorry typo. Yes NM. I was discussing Texas with a friend on another thread.

ok but what was wrong with the old one? this is my point tbh, so the government spending funds to build a two story FBO so that some rich people can what? Look out at airplanes while they get worked on? There was nothing wrong with the old one and frankly it's a waste of money that could be better used elsewhere

No argument.

Rich guys pay a lot of fuel taxes to fly those jets. The hire people to fly and maintain those jets. The little guys are getting pushed out of airports mine included. It is what it is.

Yeah but how does building a new FBO attact rich guys. My assumption is they aren't hanging out there, it's probably the pilots. It just reeks of "well we have this money sitting here so lets just use it." Then on the other hand we got ... "we don't have money in the budget for that"

Coupla things going on here.

"Well, we have this money . . ." is one of the leading causes of government spending. If they don't spend it, they will get less next year.

Also, rich guys with nice airplanes don't like to go to smelly old FBOs. They want it to be shiny and new with good looking receptionists and look like people are spending money on THEM. Once word gets out, more will come.

The last time I visited Williston, the FBO was hardly smelly and old. In fact, it was rather pleasant. I don't understand the need to upgrade it, unless it was truly "spend it or lose it."

OTOH, I'm somewhat glad when I see an airport accepting grant money, as it obligates them to the list of grant assurances.

What states all do this, taxing property such as vehicles, planes, etc yearly? Seems crazy to me. In ND we have yearly property tax on houses and land, I didn't even realize some states do vehicles and other stuff.

There are quite a few. NH and VA off the top of my head.

Taxachusetts taxes vehicles. They used to charge a sales/use tax on aircraft (but I think that went away, after I bought my airplane, of course)

when you register a vehicle every year, you're charged a state & local tax. It does go down every year, and for the vehicle I buy, it's pretty cheap. Plane is only $100/year because its past a year cutoff and under a weight limit.

Don't get me started on EV taxes, the new frontier of nonsense.

How so? A quarter of road and bridge funding comes from fuel taxes. Given tax credits on some EV purchases, that also removes some general funding for infrastructure as well.

Because the amount some states are charging is way more than what the average gas auto is paying in fuel taxes.

Interesting. Texas recently (2023) increased the annual registration fee to $200 for EVs. For regular cars/trucks it’s ~$60 and the average person pays ~$120/yr in fuel taxes. Seems fairly equivalent, but I don’t know about the other states.

Everybody’s property (house) tax gets a ding for county roads and bridges too, as well as local city bonds that help drive the tax rate each year.
