Where No Confection Has Gone Before?

Today, entertainment giant Paramount (PARA,formerly ViacomCBS) has announced its next entry in its long-lived “Star Trek” franchise: An animated version featuring the marshmallow-based Easter confection known as “Peeps.”

“Star Trek: Strange New Peeple” will replace legendary characters such as Captain Kirk and Dr. Spock with Peep doppelgangers. According to executive producer Alex Kurtzman, “The success of our other Star Trek animated series indicates a positive market for additional efforts. ‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Prodigy’ appeal to adults down to middle graders. We needed a ‘Star Trek’ to grab the pre-schoolers as well.”

Industry insiders report that this was mostly inspired by the successful Lego off-shoots of “Star Wars.” However, the Danish company is solidly locked in with Disney (which obtained the franchise in 2012), and no deal was possible. Kurtzman found that Just Born Quality Confections (the makers of Peeps since 1923) had no similar agreements. Details of the deal have not been released, but insiders report “There are some Peeps buying yards of gold chains.”

Production will begin on 18 April (the day after Easter) and the company plans to add it to the Paramount Plus service in time for Christmas 2022.
