Basic Med expires the end of the year but the insurance company won't accept it due to age. It wants me back on Class 3. Logistically, not a problem since there's a great AME in town that I've seen in the past before I went on BM. But this is such a pain.

so what else is new.....(?)

sigh.
That's my dr's comment, too. As he pointed out, compared to most of his other patients our age, I'm doing d*mn good. Waiting for the insurance company to check with another carrier on the Class3 vs Basic Med. I could probably pass the Class 3 except for...the A1C, which has been 6.4 and below for years, spiked up to 6.7 last month. Too many chocolate brownies.

How old are we talking? Didn’t think you were that much of a geezer.

What insurance company?
Still under debate and still under question. The quote from Old Republic I got this morning was all wrong (I really think the staff is the problem). I asked for the hull value to be increased from 60K to 75K, it wasn't. Plus, there was a line at the bottom:

"[pilot] is/are required to possess a valid FAA medical ISSUED by a designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) within the 12
calendar months preceding the flight involved."

The staff admitted they forgot to up the hull value, got a new quote. The company sent out for 2 additional quotes, one from AIG and the other from Starr. Prices & coverage are pretty much the same. But neither of these have the FAA Medical/AME clause. When I asked, the reply was

"Usually everyone is flying under basic med and it’s not an issue." But until I get confirmation one way or the other, I'm not sending a check.

But just in case, I called my handy AME that I used before Basic Med, booked a consult but he's out of town and I can't get in until late June. And again, just in case, I booked another blood panel (A1C) because the last one was 60 days ago, and the FAA wants within 30 days.

Hopefully I'll have the yea or nay decision on basic med tomorrow. If nay, then I need an appt with my GP to write the letter about the A1C following the FAA script.

Just did a bit more research...apparently the FAA worries about A1C considerably higher than mine. I've kept it at 6.4 and below for years, but it spiked up in April to 6.7. I was under the impression that as long as 6.4, the AME can issue without any further ado. Reading the 2023 Guide relating to Type 2, it specifically mentions that the AME must defer if A1C is over 9.0. I'm definitely not anywhere near that.

So, Dr Bruce....is this true or has the limit changed for in-office issue of Class 3?

I'm with AIG and they've been fine with Basic Med, but I'm just a youngster, relatively speaking.

if your HbA1c is 6.7 and you have "diabetes controllled by diet and exercise" (no meds), That's a straight up issuance.

Will they write a liability-only policy? Is the situation any different for sport pilot?

I was carded on my 40th birthday. Trust me, I can still pass for 50.
My older brother got carded when he took his 21-year-old daughter out for a drink on her birthday.

He also got carded buying drinks for our cousin (my age) and me a couple of years before…the bartender wasn’t worried about the two of us.

I got carded the day after my 66th birthday. I laughed and asked the girl if I really looked under 21... she said no...:frown3:

Before the accident last month I wasn't really feeling my age. I have really felt my age since...

I’m with AIG flying under basic med. has not been a problem but I am getting older. I was advised stay with the same carrier and same model airplane. For the record I fly a Cessna 150 and I’m 78

I've been with Old Dominion for 25 years, 10 yrs on basic med but this year will be changing unless AIG or Starr insists on Class 3. Waiting to hear back. Already booked the appts, just in case.

@murphey, since you're getting old and all, and the probability of trips to the hospital are increasing, you'll be in good hands at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. My daughter heads west on Saturday to start a two year residency there :-)

What’s her specialty?

AVEMCO added an annual Medical to my policy this year. I told them I'm flying under Sport Pilot privileges and they removed the requirement without any other changes to the rest of the policy. Wonder what will happen if MOSAIC ever gets final.

Being a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, can confirm that their residency programs are top-notch and really focused on great clinical care (the research is solid too, but it's less focused on research than somewhere like Hopkins).

I have a friend who's 75. He's a 1/3 owner of a Cirrus SR22. At the last renewal for the plane's insurance, the carrier told the broker that they would not be renewing the policy next year due to the age of my friend and one of the other partners.

Was Avemco not an option? I’m planning on, praying, for my SI class 3 then moving straight to basic.
