When Foreflight added synthetic vision, my instructor made the comment that the next step would be adding an ILS function. I didn't give it much thought until I read that the new Stratus 2S has a barometric altimeter. This brought me back to my instructor's comment. Is such a thing possible? Is there any value to it? Obviously it would be completely against the regs to use it, right? But one of the Yaseu hand held radios has an ILS? I guess useful in an emergency. :dunno:

In an emergency, any nav system is helpful. Better than nothing. Though coupled with SV, it would provide amazingly improved situational awareness.

Wouldn't need the barometric altimeter to do it. WAAS is plenty accurate enough to do that...and is how it's done on a common certified approach GPS that has no altimeter input.

I'm sure a few pilots already use the Geo ref plates to complete an approach illegally. I noticed wing x eliminates the location on approach charts when they are expired. Sounds like a cool feature to have as a backup with synthetic vision.

It's a great combo in ForeFlight.

Careful. If somebody here sees your idea w/screenshot, goes out and flies their airplane to the ground, they might sue you as an accessory since they got the idea from you. Be careful who reads your posts. It is complete Idiocracy out there!! :hairraise:

A few pilots do all sorts of things illegal, including completing an approach without an instrument rating. Maybe without a pilot certificate at all.

There is a big difference in asking can it be done, compared to is it legal to do it. You can use as portable for situational awareness, but not fly an approach. If you loose power to your panel it's good to know you have a backup.
