Starter just goes "kachunk"

I had a similar issue on my mooney right after I bought it only when it went kachunk pieces of the bendix gear went flying. After some research, I discovered someone had put on the correct starter, but the wrong ring gear. It worked great for about 100 hours until the mis-matched teeth lined up just perfectly wrong and went boom. It took me quite awhile to figure out what the deal was.

Moral of the story, make sure the starter gear is the right type of gear for the ring gear (or vice-versa).

You don't have to count the teeth, one is U shaped and the other has sharp angles at the root of the tooth. Screen Shot 2018-06-18 at 10.20.00 AM.png
