AIM 1-1-8 talks about Navaid standard service volume. It lists different SSVs for different types of VORs (ie. terminal, low altitude, etc.). My question is how do I know what kind I’m dealing with.

The information is available on the charts and chart supplement. How you access it will depend on what tool you're using for your charts.
 
ok, thanks. Actually looking at the legend in the chart supplement would have answered that question had I not been so lazy. I haven't found it on a chart yet, but I'll keep looking.

I’m sure FF has a feature for it but I use Airnav for that. Just select navaid and put in the ID.
 
didn't even think about airnav, but that works great. I haven't found it in FF outside of the digital chart supplement pages.
 
The type of VOR (T, L, H) is indicated in the A/FD.
