This is sad to hear. Sporty's is a stone's throw from my home field.

Sad to hear but he led a full and long life. I got to meet him a couple of times (at sportys years ago and Oshkosh more recently). Very nice man and real champion of GA.

As an aspiring and new pilot 30+ years ago, getting the Sporty's catalog in the mail was like a kid getting the Sears holiday toy catalog.

so, if you're a Buddhist do you fly east? And if you're an atheist do you get composted in place? Never met the man, but I've bought a lot of plane goodies from Sporty's over the years. Nowadays, I will shop around and often pay a higher price for an item elsewhere if the shipping cost is low enough to reduce my total out of pocket expense. With Sporty's shipping and handling costs, that isn't hard to do.

I stopped by Sporty's about 20 years ago when I was in the area with a trainee who was also an aviation enthusiast. Happened to run into Hal, and asked if we could get a picture with him. He graciously agreed and had one of his employees take the photo. Super nice guy who did a lot of great things to promote GA.
