First, if you enjoy watching the tropics, let me recommend this site:

One fascinating link is the "Precipitable Water" loop:

Second, if anyone here needs to evacuate from the path of Danny or any subsequent tropical storm or hurricane, Copperhill, TN is about 1,800' MSL and far enough from the coast to be relatively safe. I can provide lodging and transportation, or there are motels nearby. I can probably get at least one plane in a hangar in a pinch, but I can't promise.

Anyway, keep that in mind - do NOT wait until the last minute, and Homestead and Punta Gorda have shown that a hangar may not be safe in a strong enough storm.

The subject title had me thinking this was something WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY different.

Eddie,
As many times that you have mentioned Copperhill on here, I am now very inclined to swing by there if I am ever in the area.

Copperhill would be just at the far right corner about 5 miles beyond the mountains in the distance. North GA is about the only place in GA I can stand.

Thanks for the warning, links, and hospitable invite.

As models go, I always look at the GFDL as a kind of "mean" track, and find it unusually fair in estimating the eventual path, except for every time it hasnt been, like it was for Charlie, and Andrew.

You're welcome!

We went to bed in S Broward county, FL with Andrew drawing a bead on Ft. Lauderdale, just 12 miles east of us in Cooper City. It was the tiniest little bobble in its track at the last minute that took it south towards Homestead.

That devastation led to me taking hurricanes and tropical storms very seriously. And even weak ones - Wilma and Sandy come to mind - can still cause a LOT of damage and misery.

If in doubt, get the f*** out!

We've lived in Florida for long enough to know that those storms do whatever they want to do, regardless of what the meteorologists say they are going to do. We've gotten kind of proficient at boarding up, stocking in all the basics, having plenty of propane, and fuel on hand, and then hunkering down.
Hurricanes can seriously ruin your day, but nothing a big, bad, tornado!

After having the remains of a hurricane blow through my neighborhood I've decided that it takes a special kind of stupid to ride one of those things out. Were I living in the path of one I'd light out in my airplane and be a refugee for a few days. Thankfully the wx here may suck, but its rarely lethal.
