Good point.

I fly a low wing. A loose cap spewing fuel would be noticed. A leaking sump valve would not.

I don't use the fuel gauges for flight planning, or in-flight endurance estimation, but as I do my engine gauge scan (oil temp, fuel pressure, oil pressure) I can't help but see the fuel gauges.
 
I compare the gauges with my totalizer as part of my scan, just to make sure that fuel is not leaving without my knowning.
