Anyone up for scheduling a Southern CA fly in for sometime in April?

Oh! Guess SNA is out of the picture... 30 quid to park!!!!

why don't we all come to my home airport - POC.

I now have a futon and a couch. And three chairs.

There is a restaurant on the field - and my hangar is right next to 26L - we can sit in the chairs and rate the landings . . .

Are there many landings to rate at POC these days? I guess more than RAL or HHR, so I shouldn't cast that stone :)

I'd be happy to divert for hangar lies and airport food.

RAL is fine - I can bring my own chair -

I'm considering flying down to LA the first week of April. The intent is to take my kid to Magic Mountain, so we're thinking of KWHP.

I'd love to come. Many irons in the fire right now so I'll keep my eyes open just in case I can manage it.

When does Catalina BBQ open for the season?

I can check with the social coordinator. Maybe bring the whole fam-damily

Have you considered KSZP?

+1..think about KCMA or KOXR

I'm interested. Would need to be one of the first two weekends.

Jeff

First and last for me... I am in Hawaii for business the week of April 15..leave on Sunday comeback on Saturday..

I'm in. Catalina sounds like fun!

I would have to bum a ride from someone to do this... don't have time for a Catalina checkout...the pitfalls of being a renter for now!

The problem with Catalina or anyplace +5 miles of the ocean is the marine layer. I don't want to fly in someplace and wait three hours for everyone who is a VFR only pilot to be able to get there -

if we do a 10a or 9a arrival so as we don't blow the whole day then we have to be respectful of the VFR only pilots - unless we decide to do an IFR pilots fly-in someplace that may be IFR and we just don't give a hoot then.

Further thought needs to be given the particular place - can you imagine 15 or 20 IFR arrivals at SMO? Yeah. might as well schedule it for 1pm then.

So - while AVX,CMA.SBA,CRQ etc etc might be good ideas - the place needs:

a) A restaurant
b) lots of FREE transient parking
c) no landing fee
d) easy to get in and out of without major ATC delays
e) more or less reliable weather - which rules out places like MHV [winds] or the coastal areas -
in order to attract the most people - I'm thinking someplace inland.

I may be in town for this, we should vote on a place. I feel coastal airports shouldn't be too much of a problem, the marine layer usually comes more in the summer months. And if the weather sucks we could always go elsewhere (inland) or reschedule.

KCMA would not be a fly in for me, it would be a taxi in. If we decide on Catalina you can fly right seat in my plane Ventucky.

KCMA meets them all; haven't seen fog lately. Although I don't like usually going from #2 to #5 to land. But, since I don't even get to taxi in (I'd just save the hobbs and drive) I can also easily vote for somewhere else. Unrelated- does anyone know why KOXR was closed today?

If we do meet up here nobody can start grading landings until I am on the ground.:wink2:

I know the Oxnard is doing work on the lighting system, this might be why it was closed.

Well, if you guys want to do it without me. . . . I'll be in Boston for the Red Sox opening day the first weekend of April [6/7]

21 posts and not only do we not have a place we don't have a date proposed yet. Starting to sound like the Red Board around here.

I agree, let's figure out a place and date before the end of March. I do like MYF for Lunch but Catalina sounds good too.

On a serious note I will be at KCMA a good part of the day Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I can meet with anyone to help get this done. My vote is Catalina or MYF, but I have plane will travel to other locations too.

I am attending the Gene Hudson class as part of the Wings Safety program tomorrow at CMA.. Just PM'd you... up for a burger or something or after the class?

John

if it's decided to go to catalina, can i bum a ride? i'm out of F70

Catilina keeps coming up here. I like that place, I can't remember what the landing fee is but I do remember it was not too bad. There is enough room outside the diner to hang out and socialize and catch the DC-3 landing daily. Should we put Catilina on the short list?

Regarding Catalina, there may be an issue with a landing fee which if we "Buddy Up" shouldn't be a problem.

Flying In

Flying into the Airport is easy. We use "right traffic" for Runway 22 for landing and announce on Unicom - 122.7. The landing fee is $25. Overnight tie-downs are $15.

Consider joining the Catalina Aero Club and land for free all year!

Guests may only land and take-off during regular operating hours:
Winter Hours of Operation: October 15th - April 14th: 8am - 5pm
Summer Hours of Operation: April 15th - October 14th: 8am - 7pm

If you are planning on flying in and will require ground transportation upon arrival, please contact the Tower prior to take-off at (310) 510-0143. They can assist you with available shuttle times and any additional questions you may have. For the Airport's Automated Weather Update information, call (310) 510-9641.
I have a call into the DC-3 Cafe to see if the have any land and eat packages.... The Special Events Coordinator will not be in until Monday..

More to come..

As an alternate, maybe Chino for the Planes of Fame Museum, or Riverside and take tour of the Riverside FSS... did this in Hawthorn a few years back on they rolled out the carpet

Me thinks the FSS will be less than welcoming on a Saturday during Sequester Season . . .

I just contacted the Catilina airport, the fee is now $25 per airplane. I don't mind paying this but others may have a issue with it. I enjoy the scenery on the flight out there and back so the fee is just a small price to pay in my opinion.

Karl - there are lot of guys who will not go to AVX due to its reputation. And it is not a undeserved rep.

You have more people who still are somewhat recalcitrant to operate even near Class B and C airspace- even as SoCal based pilots -

I am not one of the above but there are many - and if we want more than 5 airplanes there we to appreciate that reluctance and lack of confidence.

AVX also has a reputation as charging every last dime they can for every last thing they can charge for- not the airport but the Island Conservancy who runs it. I think that guys who like AVX like it- but given where it is - and the need to go around LAX for the most part =- except for you guys who can do the corridor coming from the NW - I think it kind of points use toward RAL/CNO etc. . .

That's fine. I don't care where we go just trying to make something happen. RAL and CNO are ok, from Camarillo it's harder to get to those VFR then Catilina, like I said harder but not impossible so I can go there too. Not my favorite places so I am a maybe if that is where the final place to meet up. It has nothing to do with the airspace but when I fly for fun I like more scenic flights. Just throwing this out there, Santa Ynez KIZA

Riverside FSS has been closed for an age. FSDO is still there, but I can't imagine a gang of pilots wanting to tour that joint :D

Meet up with Ventucky today at Camarillo, we are open to anywhere in So Cal. I would like to see a short list of 3 or 4 places and go from there. Since I am not the one heading this up I will sit back and watch.

OK, so this my bright idea... so I may as well take it to the finish line..

Catalina - out!

Chino - Planes Fame Museum well worth it

Santa Ynez picnic area so pack a lunch

Carlsbad should we add this to the mix?

Any of the above is fine with me. At Santa Ynez we could hit the casino if we choose.
