Anybody use the Tor network? Anything useful other than fake passports, illicit guns, contract hitmen, and underage donkeys?

The Romulan Ale is overpriced and over-rated...

Last I knew Tor was the same internet just with some encryption and peer-to-peer routing of data to make it hard for you to be tracked.

Probably could accomplish the same thing using public wifi.

It's useful.

Aside from accessing tor sites, it helps keeping folks from getting tracked or someone monitoring your activity online.

Nah, just curious about how it works. Plus I would like to browse with privacy, to the extent practical.

I would say that just utilizing such a tool makes you more of a target for surveillance. My guess is that, while it could deter amateur efforts at tracking you, it would likely get you added to a watch list for those that have the tools to penetrate such a cloak.

Download the onion browser, it's free open source, give it a shot.

Only drawback IMO it's slow and sites like Google will ask you do to a captcha before your first search, really though only real drawback is the speed.

Just as an uncontrolled experiment, I loaded a tor app to my phone (I selected the free "iOnion"), and used it to access this site. "Slow" does not even begin to describe the experience. Times to change pages here were ~ one minute each. I'll accept that one might be anonymous when accessing the web via the tor system, but one would to have a real hankerin' for images of pre-teen goat sex, or whatever, to make it viable for image downloads. Maybe for a purely text-based system under a totalitarian government, but not for graphics work.

I did, and it is slow.

Have known people who've run Tor for longer than it was a well known public thing. It's really no big deal.

It was infiltrated by NSA quite some time ago. Various entry and exit nodes were being run by them per the industry news. Whether that was real or misinformation is anyone's guess. Probably both.

Just one tool in a much larger bag of tricks if you're trying to hide from big brother. Best way is to stay off the network altogether.

Snowden won't let a cell phone anywhere near him, and definitely not a smartphone, for whatever that's worth.

Dude told the public it's government was illegally spying on them, and he's the traitor? LOL. Classic.

The cryptographic Cold War continues. On a network proof ally built to be resilient to nuclear weapons strikes.

Isn't the irony, quite tasty?
