So Smoking Meth and ATC

Almost got orders to MCAS Yuma back in the 90s because half the facility was busted for dealing meth. Got Miramar instead. Much better duty station.

you can still get a pretty good burrito in MB/PB. I diverted from Miramar to Yuma one afternoon with a jet pouring smoke out of the instrument panel……….spent 5-7 hours @ NYL without a cover until a VMFAT-101 T-34 could come pick me up. Needed to go get some food, and queried the duty guy at the transient line. He offered me his USMC cover with LCPL insignia. I told him no thanks, and then proceeded to run across base jumping into bushes every time another human came along to see me in bags without a cover. Somehow made it to the MCX to grab a tin of dip and back without major incident or inciting the rage of some tenant colonel/general. Of note, that jet was the very same jet that ADM Fox bagged a MIG in during desert storm. Still can't believe they went to war in those hogs. VMFAT-101 MODEX 207…….still remember that side number

1970, I was in the USAF hospital at Cam Rahn. Got a pass to go to the BX, walking down the street in my blue pajamas. Nice blue staff car pulled up next to me. Noticed a flag on the left front with two stars, the general rolled his window down and said, This Is A Saluting Area!

I popped him a good one and he left.

Best Burrito in San Diego, Loma Bonita on Point Loma, it's on Scott St just past Shelter Island drive.

:D Awesome. Yeah they take their uniform regs serious on Marine bases. Don't get caught wearing a ball cap inside in civvies. Been corrected for not shaving while working out at the gym in my free time as well. Army was far more lenient on those things.

You know if they're gonna keep that jet around for a museum? Also, never thought about it but do you all keep the same call sign with that particular modex?

Not sure…..I'd guess that they would preserve it somehow. Only way I knew is that it still had a kill marking on the nose/side. Not sure what you mean by keeping the same callsign?

Now that I think of it, it wouldn't really be logical. Basically I was wondering if 207 has a certain call sign, say Shuter11 all the time. Not sure if that was the correct spelling you used on the strip..:dunno:

Now that I think back though, I remember on split ups it seemed like 99% of the time the wingmen were in order. So a flight of four was 11-14. I suppose those are just call signs assigned by the schedule and not modex correct?

Yeah, every squadron I've flown with uses some form of the flight sked convention…….most commonly, it is event number based, i.e. (in the -101 example) SHUTR-11 is the lead for event 1, SHUTR-12 is the wingman of the same event, and so forth. Other places just go straight down the schedule line, i.e. first line of the sked is 10 and the last is 56 or something. I'm sure there are probably other variations as well. Only time that I've seen it be different is around the boat, where you go simply by MODEX when communicating with the ship, and on combat flights where you are assigned a callsign directly from the ATO.

That's right, SHUTR. Not sure what I was thinking of. Computer only takes 5 letters.

We used the same in theater. ATO dictates call sign on particular aircraft serial number.
