SNOW DAY!!!!!

Last night, today's forecast was for frozen precip. We did get some sleet and wet snow, but the temperatures stayed above freezing all day so there were no travel issues. Tomorrow is supposed to be a big frozen precipitation day, but we'll see, we get lots of false alarms.

We've had about an inch of sleet here, so we've lucked out, missing the freezing rain. As the afternoon comes along, it's expected to start snowing and we can expect 5 - 7 inches of snow by Thursday morning. Fortunately everyone is pretty much staying put and GDOT is out treating the major roads. So far there's only been one jackknifed tractor-trailer on I-285, so what little traffic's out there is still moving, albeit slowly.

Folks just south of the city, down to almost Macon are seeing freezing rain, and there are about 50,000 without power so far. There's an area south and east of Atlanta that is expecting between a half inch and an inch of freezing rain, which will flatten many pine trees.

Well all y'all ain't whistlin' Dixie this morning. :)

As long as the power gets restored by Friday, so I can get the bi-fold hangar open and fly an hour to the beach where it will be 60 degrees... i'm cool with it!

Unfortunately the airport may get 1/2" freezing rain tonight, so that might be a challenge.

Here in the Augusta Ga area we've had a lot of freezing rain. Our house is currently without power, which is pretty rare for us since our power feed is underground. At least my iPad and iPhone are still working.

I really feel for you folks in that part of the country. You do not have the equipment we do here in the north.
Its been a really tough winter. Here we are dealing with the deep freeze. In my 50 some years I do not remember it ever being this cold.
The poor people without electric all this time, I just can not stop thinking about them. Say a prayer ever night for them.

Stay warm and stay safe.

Tony

I try to convince myself living in Michigan that I would rather have a solid cold winter as opposed to sleet rain ice melting like some of you are having right now down south (not fun)

But the past few weeks I feel like I am losing my own argument.

Life in West Michigan:
- This morning on the way to the airport it was -23c and my boogers froze while pumping gas.
- I now have to shovel paths in my back yard so my dog doesn't freeze his willy (he not small, puts his paws on my shoulder and licks my face when I get home from work, the snow is deeper than the 3-1/2 foot fence)
-Got a snowmobile stuck in a farm field last week and jumped off to start digging, it was up to my rib cage. (took 40 minutes to get moving again and had to roll, swim, flail to move around, I looked like Ralphies little brother on Christmas story when he fell down in the snowsuit and couldn't get up )
-But on the positive side, Yesterday was the first official day it has not snowed in 3 weeks, and today I saw the sun from 8:10 am to 9:48. (had to break out the sun screen):goofy:

Im thinking I need to relocate, or get a faster plane for travels to the Bahamas every weekend.

How long was you without power?

Tony

We were off about an hour, but I just got off the phone with my sister-in-law and theirs is still out. The ice is still coming down pretty steady though. My house is all electric with heat pumps and I have a well. When the electricity goes out, we have no heat and water. Fortunately my wife filled the bath tub with water before the power outage. I think we are actually some of the lucky ones right now. The forcast is for continued freezing rain through 5am tomorrow (Thursday) morning. I don't think we've seen the worst yet. Just a few days ago it was in the 60's. We are just not use to having ice like this here. If it was snow that would not be much of a problem. Ice is totally different.

We're seeing a little bit of freezing rain and some of the pine trees are starting to ice up. I hope the little bit of sun that's making its way through the clouds will melt it before the snow starts, otherwise we may lose power as well.

Got a glazing of ice on the trees here SW of Atlanta, but road and pavement is fine. Several power outages in our area, but we're good so far.

Got one pine tree leaning toward the neighbor's house. Hopefully it breaks off high or survives this storm so I can take it down after this mess is gone.

Looks like another shot of ice/snow is on the way for this evening. :mad2:

We got about two inches of sleet in NE Columbia this morning, on top of an inch or two of snow. No power outages yet. Freezing rain is forecast for the afternoon and all night. Thats probably when the power will be interrupted. Ugh.

The sleet that fell has formed into a sheet of ice on the roads and sidewalks. The bottom of the sheet is melting, but it's slipperier than hell on top. We're getting a little freezing rain now and some of the evergreens are starting to bend over. Hopefully this will turn to snow before branches and trees start falling. Georgia Power is reporting 133,000 customers without service.

On the TV news, someone was interviewing a Canadian who had stopped for the night here on his way to Florida. He was remarking how different conditions were here. He said that things stick to the surfaces much better her, presumably because its warmer.

We got completely hosed here in Raleigh. Like ATL a few weeks ago. The snow hit early and hard. Took me an hour to do what is normally a 7 minute drive. And I got out early. People all over abandoning their cars, walking home or staying in shelters. Fender benders everywhere.

We had probably 6" of snow here but the bottom 2" melted. Now its just sleet with a little freezing rain mixed in.

I'm all set up for the power to go out. Tub is full of water (I have a well) and the fire is going.

After I finally made it home, I spent 3 hours trucking around the neighborhood giving people rides in my suburban. Carefully avoiding the gridlocked areas. The roads really were not that bad around here. It was fresh powder in a lot of places, but as it went on, the stuff become compacted and begun to form ice as the bottom melts. I think all of the brine that was put down before the storm may have actually added to this problem.

I don't think the brine works in colder temperatures, and definitely doesn't work if it's been rained on first. Like that guy from Canada found out, it's compacted ice here and it's not like driving on snow.

Scene from today in Raleigh. Freezing rain hasn't even started yet.

Probably got about an inch or two total here in Marietta. Rain, then ice, then sleet, then more sleet. I deiced the cars just for something to do. I could get out if I had to, but I've got no place to go and nothing is open anyway. Lost power for about two hours, heard the transformer blow. Hope it warms up tomorrow.

Happens all the time here, don't even need snow. Raleigh is the city of oaks. Squirrels hop on the transformers, make the connection and BOOM.

Good luck in Marietta, Dave. Its all fun and games until the power goes out!!

It happened about 8:00 this morning, which my wife and figured we were lucky because we would be a the top of the list.

Thanks. It's really not too bad in this part of town, other areas are worse. At least folks stayed off the roads this time. You guys in Raleigh are having all the fun. :). Stay safe.

I spoke too soon when I made my post early this morning. The power went back out and was off until a few minutes ago. It really makes you appreciate electricity when you don't have it, especially when your house is all electric including the well pump. I built this house 26 years ago and have never been without power for an extended time like today. I am so thankful the power is back on.

Looks like y'all are having a traffic day like the one we Atlantans had two weeks ago.

Cool place, Randy!

One thing's for sure, you Southerners are getting a hint of how Mother Nature makes Northerners smarter because, as you can now see, she works hard to cull the dumb ones during the winter.

What would really help to increase the average IQ is a cold snap that's long enough to freeze the ponds over. The first pond freeze-over of the year really helps to cull out the idiots. Every year, from Mo to ND to ME, dumb rednecks drive their trucks out on the ponds before the ice is thick enough to handle the weight and we lose another one or two or three (and another few cases of Natural Light). And, as a result. the average IQ goes up again! ;)

You guys don't have Mother Nature helping you out in this regard thus they continue to breed.

I'm in the office. There's a nice track forming on the main roads, but the side roads and neighborhood streets are marginal. My wife, who is an RN by trade, was asked to come in so I got up at 6:30 for snow removal duty. There was a layer of frozen slush covered with snow, but it wasn't adhering to the driveway so I was able to remove it with a spade and a fine tined pitchfork. The neighborhood roads are sketchy, but there's an open track on the main roads.

Still coming down heavy here. (Then again, I've yet to see it go up...)

This was a few minutes ago.
