SNOW DAY!!!!!

I've got a cabin myself in Coosawattee River Resort. My car is stuck about 100 yards down the road. They don't plow these side roads and my car is definitely not setup for this.

I'm up off of Boardtown road, NE of Ellijay. Closer to Cherry Log actually. About hallway between Rich Mountain and the Cohutta Wilderness Area. We should meet up sometime. You ever fly up there? The airport's about 15 miles from my cabin so not an easy option for me. From the map it looks like your place may be closer.

Sure. I've got the Velocity at Dalton airport. She's down for maintenance right now though. I fly the EMS helo over in Blue Ridge as well so I fly all over this area.

Dalton, huh? Ellijay airport is a lot closer isn't it?

First, add a few hills, then get a few thousand of you friends to drive over it, then throw in a few folks who not only don't know how to drive on it, but even if the did, their vehicles are woefully equipped for such conditions.

Hills. Check. Just to the right of the photo.

Few thousand friends. Check. Every day on the County Road.

Ahh... I see you've hit root cause at the end there. Unequipped idiots.

It makes for good TV. :)

It is but they have no hanger space and no approaches. At DNN I've got a nice T-hanger with GPS/ILS approaches and a 5,000 ft runway. 45 min drive is getting old though. :(

Nate, it's hard to imagine, much less describe the way things happen here when the roads get icy! We have thousands of tractor trailer rigs on the roads, maybe 5% have snow chains! they take up a lot of road space when they jack knife.:mad2: Throw in a couple million people getting off work at between 12:00-2:00 PM, thousands of school buses, again, no snow chains trying to move a few hundred thousand school kids during an early snowy rush hour. It was a recipe for disaster!:nono:
Truth is we had warning, but our local TV news cries wolf two or three times a year and it's usually no big deal. No one wanted to bail out early, including me, and send their employees home at 11:00 as the first snowflake fell.:nonod: I waited until 12:30 and closed at 1:00, I was at least an hour, maybe two hours too late.
Atlanta is terrible with snow, and even worse with ice, which is what we normally get as the road temperature is usually above freezing, then the first bit if snow melts, then quickly freezes. Then we get more snow on top of the ice base, and it goes downhill very quickly! :mad2:

The simple fact is this isn't something people plan for in the southeast. If I lived in Canada then I'd invest in a 4X4. This ain't Canada. No money in the budget for something that happens once every 2 years. Same reason why Atlanta doesn't have the amount of plows / road equipment that cities have up north. It would be like buying flood insurance for someone who lives on a mountain. You gotta go with the percentages.

Having said that, I don't think Atlanta's mayor is going to get reelected.

He just did, with no real opposition! He's running for governor is 2018, he seems like a decent guy for an Atlanta mayor. The mayors office is usually scandal central, but I think he's been clean so far, or at least it's not enough to get the media's attention. :D

Well, I made it home. The main roads are mostly in good shape other than being littered with dozens of parked cars. Those spots that needed attention were spread with sand are are usable. The smaller roads are melting in the spots that get sun, and glare ice in those spots that are shaded.

I would strongly recommend not driving after dark tonight.

I don't know about that...see my post above about NC getting caught like ATL just did...that was in 2005.

I will say that the State of NC has done a great job of reacting to the hard lessons learned...The game has been handled completely different here in NC since then...we have moved away from salt and are now using a brine pretreat on the roads...it works very well...

Here in Cumberland County (and others as well) schools did close down yesterday even though it turned out that the system didn't get here until much later than planned...but hey...compared to ATL, the folks that made that call look like Einstein.

Yeah he seems alright but they sure did tear him up in the news conference today.

I think sometimes you get a set of circumstances where everything is aligned and it creates a mess like we have in Atlanta. You really can't put the finger on any one problem. There were many.

Once upon a time, Dalton was a barren airport. The management was very difficult to work with and anybody with other options took them.

Has that situation changed?

Of course, Dalton is the "Carpet Capital", so there's that, anyway!

Our dogs had all seen snow before, but we treated them to a walk regardless:

And the light dusting of snow is quite pretty.

Our pond's "Buddha Boy":

I'm no fan of any Atlanta politician, but reporters have a great grasp on hindsight.;) That being said, it was and still is a mess! Nothing anyone could have done would have prevented the icy roads, but IF everyone had bailed out earlier or stayed home it would have been a much smaller event.
One issue is very few people work and live IN Atlanta, our bedroom community commutes to Atlanta and the northern and northwestern areas mostly outside the city, but the city is the center of activity and traffic.;)
I guess Friday we will be back to normal, whatever normal is around here!:wink2:

School cancelled again tomorrow!

3 snow days? Ill take it

Our school district is run by chickens, 2in of powder and they cancel. My kids are going to be in school until august.

10F outside here today. Feels like summer compared to the last few days.

I'm not sure he can. Just started his second term.

Heh. I never claimed it wasn't a cluster****. Heh. It's just entertaining as hell from here.

We've gotten to the point here where companies send everyone home for light rain, too. LOL.

The Wussification of Urban areas will continue and become stronger as Urbanization continues to dominate where people live. All anyone out here has to do is look at any large northern East Coast city to see the model that's being duplicated instead of improved upon.

The trains will run on time to carry the rats to the rat race... Until they don't. Ha. Overpopulation and cramming humans in like sardines will make sure it gets worse.

Snow Day today.

Looks like I picked a good time to visit my folks in Jacksonville!

I'm thinking about going home tomorrow. How many abandoned cars and trucks will I have to dodge on the way to Suwanee? (75/675/285/85 on the east side)

Or should I just play hookie for another day? Friday's forecast looks warmer.

DOT just announced that they be out tomorrow with the HERO trucks helping people get their abandoned cars.

Gonna depend a lot on what the temperature does tomorrow. Reached 32 for maybe an hour today so not much thawing ans still lots of problems. If you can wait until Friday it might be best.

I think the interstates will be OK, but Friday should be perfect. If you are going crazy at your folk's place, then you'll be OK tomorrow, if you're having fun, stay til Friday. :D

All of the ice here in Marietta melted off of any asphalt that wasn't shaded most of the day. My neighborhood is older with a lot of trees, so we still have a lot of ice, but the surface streets (at least the ones with much traffic) seemed to clear pretty well.

We are back 100% here at the office...

Roads are OK...some secondary roads are full of ice but if you drive like you have sense...getting through is assured.

Yeah, all schools/govt/military stuff is closed here as well today....while VDOT waits for the sun to augment their 3 snow plows.

No kidding. Talked to the AirOps duty guy yesterday and he said they were hoping to maybe possibly have the taxiways/runways cleared mid day tomorrow so they can technically open the field again, but they aren't doing anything about the aprons/ramp areas. Fentress isn't supposed to open until next week.

That's nuts. By next week the temps alone will clear it all up!

Just got the word...Friday is Duty Section only again!

Here we go again... Expecting a rain/snow mix overnight, which may not be too bad since the temperatures are supposed to be just above freezing. Tuesday night into Wednesday looks dreadful, with the rain changing over to freezing rain and temperatures below freezing all day. That means falling trees and downed power lines, not to mention impassible roads.

Lol! I'm actually at Walmart right now stocking up. At least this time I don't have to be at work.

One forecast I heard had 2-3" of snow (which is enough to shut down ATL on its own) followed by 1/4 - 1/2" of ice (which is enough to shut down even the most 'prepared' northern cities).
