Two unrelated questions:

1) Apparently my SkyBeacon just randomly stopped working. Tower says they still see my mode-C transponder, but no ADS-B. There have been no other changes to the aircraft recently and the SkyBeacon still lights up (the nav light) so very unclear what could have changed or be causing this. Are there any quick fixes or simple things to troubleshoot before I call my avionics shop?

2) I have an unopened gallon of 20W-50 oil that was tucked in the back of a shelf in my garage that I just came across. It’s probably about 5 years old. Any reason it wouldn’t be okay to use?

Thanks

Use the SkyBeacon app to see what the SkyBeacon is doing without having to fly. Also, learn what the red light means on the beacon. (Flashing vs steady vs out.)

Oil? Use it or send it to me.

On power-up, it creates its own wifi network (named Beacon-FF01 or similar). The actual SSID and password should be in a sticker in the airplanr logs.

Use the app, connect to the beacon. It will tell you what's wrong.

We used to sell motor oil at work.
It took up to 25 years for us to use up our old oil inventory.
Most of what we had was Shell 15W40 diesel oil.
I eventually used it all up and some of it was 25 years old by the time I used it in our own trucks. The oil is gone and we still have some of the same trucks.
I also had cases of 20W50 racing oil. Used it too in work vehicles during the summer months with no problems.
I currently have 50 some quarts of Pennzoil 60W racing oil that is 20 years old if anyone is interested. 1 buck per qt.

Google AI says motor oil does have a shelf life, because the additives break down over time. It gave a generic life of 5 years for unopened oil, give or take depending on storage conditions.
