Show Us Your Pets!

Back in December, our dog Hannah, who was 16 and a half at that time, took a turn for the worse and we had to have her euthanized. We always planned to get another dog, and began looking recently. Our youngest daughter, who is now a young adult, took the loss of Hannah particularly hard. For this new dog, it was supposed to be my choice, but it's always been apparent to me that out of the four of us, I'm the least particular about what kind we get. She saw a dog that reminded her of Hannah, even though they don't look at all alike, something about her intelligence and playfulness struck a chord with our daughter. We contacted BarkVille dog rescue and set up a meeting week ago. We were in competition with one other family, but were selected because she will get daily walks with us. Meet Clea.

CleaOnOttoman.jpg
She was found abandoned and pregnant, and was turned in to a shelter, which is where BarkVille got her. She had a litter of 6, of which 5 survived, and 4 have been adopted. She's very active and playful, but is quiet except when a delivery person comes to the door. The vet who saw her estimated her to be four years old, but she acts very much like a puppy at times.

@GeorgeC I'll say to you what was said to us regarding the "cat" in the post you quoted, "That's not a cat, that's a stapler."

Nauga,
who believes you have his stapler

Bernie Poole has thumbs. When he figures out the can opener, he’ll lead the rebellion.
My #2 cat knows exactly how to open the back door from watching Mom do it. If she had thumbs, she would be opening all the doors in the house.

Boru (named after the last high king of Ireland) in Dec at 13 months. He’s a Small Munsterlander and had really encouraging first season of bird hunting.

First up, Bacca... She was a regular flyer in the Navion (she especially likes it when she can sit in the right seat). Living on an airport, she also makes airplane noises when she sees a plane she likes (whether it is running or not). She's particularly enamored with my neighbor's SeaBee.

And Katherine (orange tabby) and Wilbur (gray siamese) named after the Wrights.

Canela, who one of our employees adopted from a neighbor's farm. She chose me and kept me company in the shop, eventually got knocked up by a feral tom, birthed a litter, and disappeared.

Canela's children: Gordo, Chiquita, and Bill Burr. Keeping them inside so they don't also disappear.

Papoose, who's probably about 18 years old now. He used to sleep on the tractor seat in the pole barn, but we moved him inside a couple years ago. Minnesota winters are too tough on an old man like him.

Always had dogs growing up, don't have any currently. We have a couple donkeys, too.

It's winter, many of us are waiting for better flying weather, so in the meantime, how about showing us your pets?

We have two dogs. This one is named Hannah.

She came to us from the Homeless Pets Foundation of Marietta, Ga. She's lived with us since approximately 10 weeks of age, and is now 13 years old. She was a very active girl most of her life. Up until a couple of years ago, she was a great ball chaser. The first five years of her life she was very good on her back legs, so despite her petite size, no food was safe if left on the edge of a counter.

Now that I'm working from home, she spends her days with me.

Her hearing isn't so good, and she has cataracts, but the nose can still sniff out a bit of cheese at 40 paces. Her liver function isn't the best, so I don't know how much longer we'll have her. so we cherish every day.

This elegant lady is Ellie.

My wife has wanted to get a second dog for a few years,. I've been reluctant to do that, I wasn't sure that Hannah wanted another dog in the house. I was wrong, she likes Ellie very much and they get along perfectly.

Last year, my wife was looking to adopt an adult dog, but wasn't having much success, lots of households were looking for dogs and nearly all of the dogs my wife applied for got adopted quickly. My wife applied for a dog from Wags and Wiggles Dog Rescue , which specializes in adult dogs coming from difficult situations and high kill rate shelters. One of the volunteers from that group reached out to my wife to see if we would be interested in one particular dog that they had, who was coming out of an animal hoarding situation, and was one of the more than 50 animals inside this house. She was looking for a home that had no small children, a fenced yard, some experienced dog owners, and preferably had a dog that was not too active, as the dog she was trying to place was very shy and fearful. She brought Ellie to our house to see if she and Hannah were compatible. Hannah was interested in Ellie, and Ellie was not aggressive towards Hannah, so we kept her.

We don't know that much about Ellie's life prior to her removal from the hoarding house. Her vet estimated she was two years old when we got her last year, and we can see that she's had at least one litter of puppies, and probably at least two.

It hasn't been an entirely smooth ride. Ellie immediately latched on to my wife as her protector, and to this day she's very excited when Linda comes home from work. She also likes both of our daughters very much, and she and the older daughter are particularly close when that daughter is in town. Me, on the other hand, she's been very fearful. Things are getting better between us, she'll now come get me when she wants to go out and I can take her on walks. It was about 10 months before I could touch her without her cowering, and she and I had a little incident. One of our daughters had left a grocery bag with a few items in it on a bench, and Ellie grabbed it and took it upstairs. I found her sitting on a large chair with a bag of dill pickle flavored popcorn (?!) in her mouth. I pulled it away from her and told her that it wasn't hers. She pulled it back, I took it back again, and in a flash she bit me on the nose. Once I got the bleeding stopped, I had a few words for her, and left her alone. Fortunately, we haven't had a repeat of that episode. We did have a problem with her occasionally thinking it was OK to pee or poop in the house, and a couple of area rugs have made the ultimate sacrifice for her, but she's doing well now, and hopefully we will have her for many years to come.

Anyone else have pet pictures to share?
I’m told if u want to take something from a dog proper etiquette insists it’s a trade

We said good bye to Tiger in November. I have had a lot of dogs but this one was brutal.
Perfectly fine but the legs just didn't work anymore. It was horrible.
It is still hard to think about. He and I were close.

Our only pet at the moment. She’s a miniature Xoloitzcuintli. I call her a ‘wash and wear’ dog. We can bath her with a baby wipe if needed. And, no hair on black clothing….which is important since my wife is an embalmer/funeral director. ;)

Do you have to put sunscreen on her if she is going outside?
Seems like sunburn would be a real concern.

She is very dark pigmented so sunburn is not an issue, however, momma does not let her stay outside long enough to matter. The breed was discovered in southwest Mexico in the middle of the last century. They were Aztec dogs and were sacrificed when the owner died; they were believed to be the guide for the deceased to ‘cross the river into the afterlife’. A fitting dog for my wife’s profession. LOL

Do you have to put her in a sweater when it's chilly outside?

Remy has developed an eye condition that's exacerbated by UV light, so he's learning to wear doggles. He took to them pretty quickly and now gets excited when we take them off the hook because he knows it means playtime. Maybe some (lightly) tinted ones will make him look more like Tom Cruise and less like Dobby the house elf.
