Should AirVenture dates be changed?

June would be worse for severe storms.

In the old days (2012 - 2014)? Airventure was scheduled to start on the last partial week of July and end in the first week of August.
About 8 -10 years ago they change it to the complete week before the 1st of August, ending in July .
Because you are required to be a current EAA member to camp and if your membership expired at the end of July, you were denied camping unless you renewed your membership.
Seems trivial, but there was significant push back from members being "forced" to renew their membership at the camping registration counter.
So, that is the rational for scheduling Oshkosh, ei (EAA Airventure).

As I'm watching the storms move through (hope everyone there is ok, looks like the worst hit further south), I wonder (again) if last week in July is really the best time to hold AirVenture.
For the people that know more about the weather in that part of the country, what's your take on it? Are there better weeks in the year for this event?
You could go way earlier, like June, and probably have better weather. Maybe. You'd also freeze everyone to death in their tents at night. (This is a problem even in late July...)

In the twentysome years I've been going, they haven't changed much, but once they did it a good week earlier than any others and then they switched it back. I think they know exactly when they can get the best attendance... And I don't think you'll see much benefit from changing it.

Impractical - Oshkosh is in Wisconsin. By state law, public schools in Wisconsin cannot start before Labor Day without a waiver from the state. Since most, if* not all, private schools follow the state schedule, that means that school year ends around Memorial Day.
Hah! Schools here (Germantown) end mid-June.

Schools? Isn't OSH majority middle/geri-aged empty nesters and "dog-kid" owning DINKsters anyways?
No. Plenty of kids here. My 8 year old just finished his 9th Oshkosh (in spite of the pandemic), and my 2 year old just finished his fourth (one in utero, 0, 1, 2). And they freaking love it. And we should do everything we can to have as many kids at Oshkosh as possible.

Out of context, there was at least one former poster here that would wholeheartedly agree with that. They went to prison for...yeah...kid stuff.

Yep, they moved it to allow two weekends of activity. So, you can fly in on Weekend 1, stay until mid-week, and another group comes in behind you and leaves on Weekend 2. Probably helps a lot with attendance that fewer people have to consume vacation days at both ends of their visit.
Except the show is not really open on the weekends. So that could limit the number of people attending.

But I am sure they have the data to support the current schedule.

I don't know about better weather. But for 45 years now I've been complaining that Oshkosh/Airventure needs to be 2 weeks earlier so I can get back for anniversary and wife's birthday.

I grew up in Appleton, my wife is from Fond du Lac, and we also lived in Green Bay, Eau Claire and now Wausau. It seems to me that the best months to fly are May and September, however, lots of people are in school during those months.

If she's let him miss their anniversary and her birthday for 45 years, sounds like he doesn't need to!

She actually made the trip with me last year. 2,000 miles (including detours through Glacier NP, Mt. Rushmore and Devil's Tower. She spent most of the week enduring the sweltering heat and sudden thunderstorms inside our little camper van. She said next time she goes, plane or no plane, she will have a class A pusher with a full bath and enough A/C to make an Alaskan native feel at home.

For some reason the weather at the end of Osh seems to be quieter than the beginning. I think later in August might be a better fit.

It may be July and half the country is dying of sweltering heat, but Hell may actually be starting to freeze over. The wife was looking at who knows what on FaceSpace and turns to me and says, "Osh Kosh looks fun, maybe we should go sometime."

Edit: Do not like this post!

The only date change I could support for Oshkosh would be extending it by a week. And for WK2, I don't need the vendors or the airshow. Just the hardcore aviation folks, the seminars/forums, and the neat airplanes. And beer.

Man, and I thought I was antisocial.

Should go there in the next few weeks... "I don't know what the big deal is"

Oh, no, I love a good party and socializing. What I don't love are clueless idiots that have zero awareness of their surroundings. And when you get that many people in one area the collective awareness PLUMMETS.

Agreed. But airventure isn't THAT bad.

Nah. Just make your reservation at the Super 8 NOW, for next year.....

I've had a couple bad experiences at Oshkosh, but they're rare, and usually from the genpop crowding the airshows. The areas that are mostly pilots are great and it feels nothing like the huge event that it is.

I’m here now and it’s a light rain supposed to last an hour or so, the rest of the day is supposed to be fine. The rain cools things down too. But yeah, it seems to always have some weird weather every year and it’s too hot. I was thinking mid May would be better.

I once talked to a Wisconsinite one year, and he said he’s met people who believe that it stays cold up there year round and are surprised at how hot it can get. Ironically, the hottest recorded temperature in the state of Georgia (where I’m from) is 112 degrees F, whereas the hottest temperature recorded in Wisconsin is 114 degrees! So……………there’s that.

When I left Wisconsin to go to college at the University of Missouri, several people there asked where I was from, and would say, "Oh, you're up there next to Canada." No, not exactly. You cannot drive from Wisconsin to Canada without going through another state.

Yes, it gets hot here in the summer, and often humid as well.

Only because of the ridiculous UP. If that were part of Wisconsin, LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE, then there would be a border.

This all goes back to the fight between Michigan and Ohio over Toledo, I think. Having spent time in both Toledo and the U.P., Michigan clearly got the best deal. We in Wisconsin love the Yoopers (hey der! Go Pack Go!) but it's OK the way it is. We kinda like living in just one time zone.

It is weird that the UP is not part of Wisconsin. Another thing is that the UP is still in the Eastern time zone regardless of how far west you are. Driving back from Marquette one night, it was 10 pm with a bit of daylight still left (during summer).

Edit: A few of the western counties in the UP are in Central time, but the majority of them are Eastern.
