The other day at work I had to plot multiple datasets on a single chart in Excel 2007. I remember what a PIA this is if you don't do it often, so I tried this just to see if it would work (I have only done this for scatter charts):

  1. Select the data set and make a chart
  2. Select the next data set and make a new chart
  3. Select the trace in chart #2 and hit CRTL-C or CTRL-X (copy or cut)
  4. Select the first chart and do "Home->Edit-> Paste" to copy the trace to the first chart
  5. Repeat for other data sets
The data sets are properly combined in one chart! I almost fell off my chair when I saw it actually worked! I combined 4 plots on one chart with no hassle!

My data sets each had slightly different values for the abscissa points (X-axis), but they were all in the same range.

This doesn't seem to work in earlier version of Excel...

Hope this helps...YMMV depending on the types of charts you work with...

hmmm interesting. I've never tried it that way.
Thanks for the tip.
