Said goodbye yesterday to my grandfather.. 20 year marine veteran. He's the reason I am into things that fly. We used to build R/C planes (i think there's 20-30 of them and radios in his storage unit), and he used to take me to the airport to airplane watch. By the time i got around to getting my PPL, he was too overweight to stay in W/B for any of the piston singles. The attached photo is me with a P-40 in about 1980 at CRQ.. Wow how that place has grown. Semper Fi pops, and thanks for getting me into the air.

Sounds like you gotta a lot of great memories with him. Mine are getting up there in the years too. I never feel like I spend enough time with them.

I loved model airplanes. I haven't done much of anything R/C since I lost my hand.

Brian,

Agree completely. I wish I could have taken him flying and sailing.. The other skill he taught me.. He really was a cool cat..

If you are careful, plan right, you can become him to your G/kids.

Good point Tom. I have already planted the aviation seed in my kids' heads. When I asked their mom to marry me, it was in an airplane, and that same day, i gave them their first airplane ride.. Never knew how handy the ISO feature on the intercom could be in busy airspace

My condolences Steve. I wish I could spend time with my grandparents but the oldest just died 2 years ago. (I see him in my dreams and they're so vivid) So talk to him as if he was here. Those that still have their grandparents cherish the times!

If it wasn't for my grandpa I wouldn't be able to afford to fly. He saved money all his life and I inherited some funding.

My dad was 47 when I was born and his dad was 56 when he was born, so consider yourself blessed. What's great is you become the living part of the legacy he leaves and your love of aviation is, in essence, him sharing his love of aviation. Tell his stories to your kids. There's no better way to celebrate his life.

Condolences. It is good that you have nice memories. I was fortunate and was able to spend time with 4 grandparents and 3 great grandparents. Now I have one left, and she is 102 and in failing health. I will always remember my grandparents and great grandparents.

Condolences Steve. I consider the opportunity to have known all four of my grandparents, and two of my great-grandparents, one of my life's many blessings.

I know you will miss your grandfather. He's still in your heart and you'll hear yourself saying thing he said. Well... You probably do already.

Sounds like he was a great man. He will be eternally flying better skies. Condolences on your loss.
