Say hello to SkyDog

I pray that you're wrong. You and Piper will be in my prayers.

Nick, I really hope he just comes home. :(

I don't know what I'd do without my dog. He keeps me sane.

There may be some positive update here.

Brianna and I went door to door asking neighbors for information, and one of our neighbors said that her daughter's friend found a German Shepherd mix about his height earlier and took him to the shelter on the complete opposite side of town.

Its a long shot, but its all I have at this point. The concerns come from the fact that he's microchipped and AVID hadn't heard anything yet, and the animal control site does not have his picture up like it does with every other impounded dog today.

I hope I didn't kill my doggie.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

First, best of luck with the skydog. Seriously, if anything happened to one of my dogs I would feel awful, so I hope you can find him. Ours carry tags with our address and phone number on their collars, which they wear all the time.

Now something doesn't make sense to me, and I have to ask. I do NOT mean to disparage anyone. Nick, you've posted that you feel the need to posses firearms with the justification that where you live is dangerous, and have included in that justification personal experiences that do indeed make it sound hazardous. So in such a hazardous environment you leave your door wide open? Something doesn't make sense.

He didn't say it was his front door; could be that Nick left his bedroom door open, and the bedroom window. Perhaps Piper got into the bedroom and out the window...

That is exactly what it is.

I usually close and lock my bedroom door each morning, leaving the window open because my room gets so hot. Unfortunately, yesterday, I forgot to close/lock my bedroom door. I never leave the house without locking the front door and I have nothing worth stealing in my room except my bed.

Either way, its looking more and more like I killed Piper, as he's nowhere to be found. I have to check the humane society, and that pretty much means I'll be putting up "Lost Pet" signs around my neighborhood, which I will live at for the next 9 days.

:(

I dont' think that's a really good way to put it.

We all do our best to protect our pets from themselves, but no one can be 100% effective 100% of the time. Usually when a dog sneaks out on his/her own, it turns out OK. But sometimes it doesn't.

I doubt that there are very many of us who have not had their pet get loose at least once.

dont give up yet Nick.

Once when I was home I went out to the airport and there was a new airport dog. I thought that was odd and the airport manager said that this one had just shown up a week or two ago, they had been leaving it food in the hangar. It had no tags or anything. It looked a lot like my uncle's dog. I went flying for a while and then when I came back I saw the dog and was sure it was my uncle's dog so I yell "Pete!" and it comes running over. I call my uncle and turns out the dog had run away a week or two ago and they had given up on it. They came out to get it and took him home. Airport was probably a good 3 or 4 miles from home.

Nick, things can happen. Our dogs have gotten out into the neighborhood because someone left a gate open. They've been conditioned not to go into the street, but if one saw a squirrel or something that might go right out the window and they could easily run out in front of a car. These things can happen. You've given your dog a good home for a long time, and the absolute worst case scenario is he got a lot more out of life than had he been euthanized at the pound.

Nick, I don't know what to say. I hope that's Piper at the pound crosstown. If not, I'm really sorry for you. Losing a companion like that is tough. :frown3:

Nick, first, let me say, I'm sorry to hear that he's gone AWOL for the time being, and that I agree that you didn't kill him. Dogs run for whatever reasons they alone know. Our dog has an annoying habit of bolting through any open door and heading for a neighborhood where we think he used to live before he was found as a stray (probably because he ran away from those owners and then moved away as the collar had no ID). Our only solution was a wireless radio fence. (http://www.radiofence.com/dog-fences/petsafe-wireless-instant-dog-fence.htm) It has made it possible to leave doors wide open without fear of him getting out. We even take the transmitter to Grandma's house and set it up there when we visit. The range is set by a thumbwheel on the side of the transmitter. You could take it to a campground and make the radius 5 meters if you wanted. The collar's "correction level" (read shock) is adjustable for size and temperament of the dog. It only takes a couple of misadventures for the dog to realize there are boundries to his wandering.
I really hope Piper shows up.

Stop that!! Life is tough enough without looking for unearned blame. Things happen, and sometimes, like this time, they are heartbreaking. But just because something hurts really bad that does not mean you have to find ways to make it hurt more, to seek out undeserved punishment, dammit.

You didn't do anything with the intention of losing Piper.

Now get back to hoping, and prepare for whatever comes down the pike. :) I've got my fingers crossed for y'all.

Nick,

Around here dead animals are removed by the Highway Department. I imagine that if you called about the spot on the road and the day they could tell you if they found a dog matching Piper's description.

I'm just thinking it's better to know for sure than keep wondering.

I'm with Tom stop beating yourself up about it. That would be a wife's job.

Well, maybe some good news. The neighbor's kid's friend that picked up that dog took him to a place called "Watermelon Ranch" which refused him because they're full. I called them and they vividly remember the dog, described him accurately as Piper, and mentioned that the person was not happy about having to drive back into Albuquerque to take him to the shelter there (Watermelon Ranch is in Rio Rancho, and Rio Rancho would not have accepted him knowing the dog was lost in Albuquerque).

The Watermelon Ranch person offered up that she might have taken Piper to the Shelter in Rio Rancho and lied about where they found him to make it easier than driving back into the city. I called Rio Rancho and they were not very helpful over the phone, so after work, I gotta book it out there and see if I can find him.

Piper is alive, somewhere, it seems. Now I gotta find where.

If the dog is chipped why don't they call you???? This makes me wonder why I spent the $$ having all our zoo chipped.

Good luck Nick!

Positive thoughts, dude. Think positive thoughts!!!!!!

I'm pulling for you, and Piper.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS!!!!

thats what I was wondering Gary. Nick didn't you say that Piper has tags? I presume with your address/phone number? Are the people in Albuquerque seriously dumb enough to take a tagged dog to a shelter?

Unfortunately, he did not have his collar on when he left the house. But he is microchipped, and why he hasn't been scanned yet, I'm not sure. If nothing else, the people at Watermelon Ranch should have scanned him for sure.

This is turning into a little mystery story. Why doesn't anything ever happen easily for me? lol.

I'm not sure if it's still true, but I believe at one time there was an issue with what brand of chip was in the animal, and what brand of scanner the shelter had that could effect if the chip was identified. I recall at least one instance of a dog being held at a local shelter a while back because they knew he had a chip, they just couldn't get the info off it until they borrowed a different brand scanner from another shelter in the town next door.

Hope you find him and everything works out. I'd be sick if either of mine went missing. :frown3:

When I looked into it there were three incompatible systems and I couldn't get a straight answer on which to use before my attention wandered. I keep intending to ask the vet which they recommend.

Pancho isn't chipped. I often don't even have the collar on her, but like now it's on all the time. She doesn't move fast enough to wander any way. I've had the gate from the yard open and she never goes anywhere, although I've had nightmares.

My biggest worry now is coyotes getting in not her getting out. They're still firmly encamped next door and are very brazen. There lie there counting cars and startinbg at us. Just yesterday a neighbor was walking his dogs over there and got mad and scared ta death seeing them.

Anyway Nick, Pancho says Piper will be finding daddy soon.

My sister just sent a picture of a dog she found at the Rio Rancho pound and it might be him. The picture was hard to tell though.....

It was not him. :( I'm going to check all three again tonight.

Good luck. Our dogs have their collars on always. Our address is on the tag. A good habit for you to get into if you can retrieve your lost pooch, which I sincerely hope you can accomplish.

Don't beat yourself up over this. Anyone can make a simple mistake like leaving a bedroom door open.

Nick, I haven't heard you mention checking local veterinarian's offices... when our puppy got loose and ran away (and I remember that sick feeling--wondering "where is she, is she okay"), it ended up that a person had found her and dropped her at the local vet's office. Try giving them all a call, both to see if they have Piper, and to see if anybody's called reporting finding her.

There is a non-zero probability that he will end up with some other family - someone with a found dog doesn't always connect with the lost owner - particularly for a younger dog that can cover a lot of territory.

One of the dogs we had had been a stray that never got connected with the owner. She had a good life with us.
