Flatland, VFR pilot, flying a Pa28-235, what route would you recommend?

I've done that GPS direct in a 182 with no issues. What is your plane's ceiling?

Probably 12.5/11.5, but don't remember for sure. Definitely not in O2 levels.

I've done something similar several times, going nearly direct between TUS and ABQ in a 182. It's been a few years (last trip was to intercept the total annular eclipse) but typically there'll be a 50-mile stretch where you lose flight following, and they have to give you the next frequency very early.

If there is strong turbulence, or clouds prevent VFR, the airways route that takes you over Socorro, Truth or Consequences, etc. might be better, which I've done a few times also.

You could divert a bit east intercept then follow US Route 180 through the mountains.

IFR(I follow roads) adds 70 miles, can make flight @ 8500, multiple airports along way, I-25 or I-10 provide emergency landing along the way. Will add 30”
