I really like my Sandel 3308 EHSI. (I know it is no longer serviced, but they are still available on the used market.) Currently, it is connected to a GNS430W. This is in a PA32R-300 (Lance).

I am contemplating some upgrades.

It looks like the G5 is just a simple digital version of a basic HSI without all the bells and whistles found in the Sandel. I would like to hear from some other pilots that have flown both the 3308 and the G5. What they lost or gained when moving to the G5. While the G5 looks like the best option, I want to prepare myself for stuff I might miss.

Going from SN3308 to G5, you lose:
  • Analog inputs
  • Arc view
  • Map overlays
  • WX500 input
  • Marker beacon input
You get most of that back by installing a GI-275 instead of the G5.

But if you stick with the G5, you gain:
  • Wind vector
  • Density altitude
  • GPS steering
  • Battery backup
  • 6+ pounds
