I've been using phosphoric acid a lot.

Have used Naval Jelly in the past, but am tempted to give Corrosion X's rust remover a try. I am really liking their corrosion inhibitor and lubricant.

Actually the most effective rust remover(and I've been doing a LOT of rust removal lately) is a knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder. Wear safety glasses at a minimum, highly recommend a face shield and heavy clothing. Those wires HURT when they come off and they do come off fairly often. Hearing protection is a must if using it for more than a couple minutes.

Flap discs in a grinder work better on flat surfaces and are less painful but if there's pitting from the rust it won't get down in the pits like the wire wheel will.

BTDT. On a fire escape. In Chicago. In January. Not fun. Not warm. Not happy.

Then got to fire up the cutting torch and cut the other fire escape off the ten story building on the other side because it was too far gone to do the grinding wheels, knotted wire wheels, and anti rust primer and paint.

Coldest work I ever did. That wind off the lake is just brutal.
