Russian tu-154 crash on Christmas

They're blaming copilot for hitting the flap lever instead of gear.. oh yeah, and being overloaded.

The wrong lever theory is an invention of journos. Fake News. The flight continued for more than a minute and the gear goes up on Tu-154 at 100 ft off the ground (subject to positive rate after rotation). If they pulled flaps up instead of the gear, they would not fly for 70 more seconds and make 2 normal turns for the departure procedure they were on.

The latest leaks from the investigation hint at some kind of an unknown malfunction, possibly the stab not going to zero degrees when flaps went up (it is automatic linkage on the 154). Or perhaps flaps stuck at 15. The crew failed to recognize the fault and apply the procedure, then ran up the AoA while being distracted. Heck maybe it was the flap indicator showing a bogus value, or something equally simple.

The leaked CVR transcript shows poor discipline and and no adherence to procedures. I'm not surprised they stalled it. Complacency, fatigue, pencil-whipped recurrent training, complex and challenging airplane that requires attentiveness: that's all it took.
