Rough River Kentucky Fly-in 2019 - April 26-28

I 'think' we were waiting until wed or thurs to start a 2019 thread. 6er had a phone call out to some peeps or something like that.

Just a suggestion. A little further north is the French Lick resort. Restaurants, entertainment, golf, spas, casino, etc. The resort will come pick you up from the local airport, no transportation needed. Would make a great fly in destination.

I don't know if there's an official KY fly-in rule book, but I 'think' you have to have made it to #1 before you can suggest a location for #2. not sure, but I think that's a rule.

ok, enter '#1' and '#2' jokes here...…..

But I’ve gone #1 and #2 in French Lick

2019 Destination: ROUGH RIVER KY
Targeting Apr 26-29 but need to confirm with the mean lady that answers the phone on Wednesday.

Thats a funny name actually. We did a 20 mile canoe trip and the river is actually very smooth .

I flew over to the airport a couple weeks ago to check out the resurfaced runway and its pretty nice.
Not a huge place and some taxiing back needed, but even if everyone shows up at the same time it still won't be the cluster that Osh was this year haha

Is it more ‘walkable’ than ky dam? Based on what u saw, whadya say?

According to Google maps, it was about 1.29 miles from the airport to the Ky Dam Village Resort we stayed in.
Approximately 4233ft from the campfire to Ky Dam Village Resort (not including zig-zag pattern at 1am)
Rough river looks to be 1563 ft.
Plus there are tennis courts and a beach to pass out on just a tad down the road, which should result in less chiggers, snakes, ticks, and poison ivy...but will be less shady the next morning. So bring sunscreen.

Let's just all send @Skyrys62 10 or 20 bucks and he and his lovely lady can go do some recon for a night or two on our dime, and provide a detailed report.

Agreed... I love Recon

@KayDeeW and I flew in and stayed at Rough River last year. Although we had the bikes, they really were unnecessary, as everything is within walking distance, and nothing required the bikes. It was nice, but not quite as nice as Kentucky Dam (with the exception of the new, air conditioned, airport building. That was very nice).

And @Stingray Don , we flew up to French lick one day while we were there. It would be a great day trip. It was only like 30 minutes away in my slow-a$$ Cherokee.

A few comments from FF:

Runway 2/20 newly paved and marked July 2018.

Called lodge and they sent over a van to bring our group of 8 to the restaurant. Great experience and service-food was also great. Highly recommend.

So Tiger, which would you prefer if you were the head honcho of this shindig. Just curious.

You mean between Kentucky Dam and Rough River?...tough choice, but I'd say Rough River is "nice enough", and it has the bonus of the airport close to the hotel. And if you actually hang out at the airport, the new airport building is a very nice gathering place. The building is just one room (well, one room with bathrooms / showers attached through a small breezeway) and not particularly big, but we liked it.

Yes. Just curious which you would think is preferable as a fly-in venue. I know you guys had bikes and didn't really hook up with the group until later in the weekend, so you may have not been aware of how dependent we were on vehicles. Felt pretty bad for those with cars, although they were very gracious about us using them so much.

However, some of that could can be minimized by everyone staying either in cabins or at the lodge rather than 50/50 like we were.

I suppose the dear leaders of this hootenanny have decided on Rough River anyway, but I was interested in the opinions of those who have actually been.

Another plus for rough river is they allow camping in the grass next to the airport. I’d be very tempted to bring a tent.

I bet they'd let you at Kentucky Dam too if you ask. They didn't allow open containers in the lobby either, but we sat there and got wasted and made all kinds of noise into the wee hours, lol.

We did that before...they only charge a few bucks a night. Only downside is the main state park road runs right past the airport, so all day and late until the night there is traffic driving past.

They "don't allow" open containers at Rough River either, but I seemed to recall Kristine having them in the airport building and not having a problem.

That’s a big downside. Hotel it is, but even so it’s not a long walk.

As a side note, if anyone was still interested in the Moonlight fly-in fly-in....it's quite a bit closer to Rough River than Ky Dam.

f**k I forgot to call
Someone call rough river and check the weekend of Apr 26-29 2019

ugh, I forgot to remember to remind you not to forget to remember.

when I check availability on rooms, it's showing something crazy like $153/night. can that be right? does that include maid service? if you know what I'm talkin about...……….OW OW OW

Yea that is high. I don’t get it. They drop to 135ish later in the summer. It’s the weekend before the Kentucky Derby not that that should have anything to do with it but who knows.
I guess it has sort of gotten popular with wedding parties and things in the lodge.

They do have a canard fly in in September that gets a good turnout.

$153 a night???????

By the by, I had my first in-flight engine failure on a return from French Lick. Just sayin’

Cheers

Didn't they play that game with your reservations at KY Dam also?

I need to check as I think the campground is closed for repairs to the dam. No worries though I will have transportation from the camp ground and see that there are several in the area.

Need to get Okie to brush up on some John Denver songs for this year. Everybody knows them.

Eh? If the campground is closed and the hotel is dipping severely into my hookerNblow fund, I vote to keep it at KY Dam.

But we’ll all find out this info when @SixPapaCharlie makes his phone call on Monday.

Thanks guys for putting in the leg work for this! Hope to be there again. If it gets finalized by October I will request the time off to be sure.
